From Wikipedia:

The Ventures had the first chart single to utilize the fuzzbox on guitar, "2000 Pound Bee" (December 29, 1962); this track utilized the Mosrite FuzzRITE.

So that would make that Nokie Edwards!

I think McCartney was the first to use it on the bass. Check out "Think for Yourself" off Rubber Soul.

OK gentlemen, my 2cents :

Acording to the book, "Crazy Fingers" By Annette Carson (... a bio on Jeff Beck, BackBeat Books, 2001) he, JEFF BECK, was the first ever muso to use a Fuzz-box live.

Jimmi Page and Jimi Hendrix saw this thing for the first time at various Jeff Beck gigs !

Now who was the first ever muso to use one in a recording - i have no idea !

So, because of this book, my vote goes to Jeff Beck as the first EVER to use one live !

There's a single by Jack Scott (late 50's?)---'It's All Over Now' where the solo is a baritone guitar through a fuzz box.

I always thought that the grand wizard Merlin had used a fuzz pedal while destroying the dinosaurs during the Trojan War...

My $.02- I'm not sure of the year, Dave Davies of the Kinks would either cut with a razor blade, or poke a pencil thru his speakers, to get a fuzz like sound.
Someone else may be more versed in this.

You'd have to look back a little further to find Link Wray did that first.
