Whoever suggested I try the stock pickups in my new guitar for a while

Yeah. No.

I'm still getting used to having a guitar with a whammy bar. Even with my lack of trem skills, I can already tell these are not going to do it for me. What can i say? My Duncan guitars have ruined my ears in a good way. :)

The guitar is an Ibanez S570 and it has Infinity 1 and 2 humbuckers in it. I love the way the wiring works. I am less impressed with the sound. I would really like a thick, balanced, modern sound in this guitar. What do you suggest?

My Dean Hardtail has a Jazz and a Custom 5, and the ESP Eclipse has a 59 and a JB. This guitar has a really different sound and feel than either of those, so I don't know that any of those pickups would work.

Help!!!!! :9:

Re: Whoever suggested I try the stock pickups in my new guitar for a while

Evo2 in the bridge, Paf Pro in the neck.

Re: Whoever suggested I try the stock pickups in my new guitar for a while

ibanez pickups are usually pretty terrible IME.

Re: Whoever suggested I try the stock pickups in my new guitar for a while

What would this guitar be used for? What type of music?

Re: Whoever suggested I try the stock pickups in my new guitar for a while

For thick, balanced and modern in an Ibanez S-style, the Breed/Breed or PAFPro/Breed combos come immediately to mind.

Re: Whoever suggested I try the stock pickups in my new guitar for a while

Thick, balanced, modern...if you don't mind the look, the PATB-2 fits that bill perfectly. It's great in guitars with a trem. I have one in my Jackson and I love it.

For thick, balanced, & modern Tone Zone / Air Norton comes to mind. If you want to stick with Duncans it's a bit harder since you haven't mentioned whether the guitar tends to be brighter or not, maybe Custom / Jazz? Knowing the style you want to use it for (as was asked previously) would also be helpful.

so it's a mahogany body S with a 24 fret neck and a ZR bridge?
nice

not my area of expertise, but seeing all the dimarzio recommendations makes me wonder how a super distortion in the bridge and an airzone in the neck would sound, and they do fit the criteria

Re: Whoever suggested I try the stock pickups in my new guitar for a while

The "Live with them" for a while advice may have been me. Sounds like something I would say. Apologies - I don't play Ibanez anymore. I was not aware of the stock pup suck.

I have to agree. I'm not feeling the Duncan here, and seeing a lot of DiMarzio recs. Something to be said there…

I say it's good advice simply for the fact that it gives you a baseline for comparison.

What are the current pickups not doing that you would like them to?

That's it! I posted a pic in the guitar room.

Re: Whoever suggested I try the stock pickups in my new guitar for a while

I really just love my Duncans. I have never thought of using Dimarzio pickups. :eek1:

I love Vai's playing :9:, but I don't know that I really love his sound. :scratchch

I'll play all sorts of things on this. I love 80's glam metal (Crüe, Poison, Ratt), but I also like really melodic things too. I'd love to be able to play the solo to Sister Christian by Night Ranger.

This is basically my Anything That Needs A Whammy Bar guitar.

Re: Whoever suggested I try the stock pickups in my new guitar for a while

I blame the guitar but that's old news.

See how you like the JB/59. If they don't quite cut it, the PATB-2 should be great.

Re: Whoever suggested I try the stock pickups in my new guitar for a while

I'll also say a PATB set or the JB/Jazz hot rodded set

Re: Whoever suggested I try the stock pickups in my new guitar for a while

I love the Jazz in my Dean <3
I love the JB in my ESP/LTD <3

Those will sound good in an Ibanez with a whammy? I'm looking to play all around and 80's glam metal

Re: Whoever suggested I try the stock pickups in my new guitar for a while

JB will do 80's metal no problem if you have the rig and chops. If you like a bright and clear neck tone then the Jazz will do it.

Re: Whoever suggested I try the stock pickups in my new guitar for a while

Since you've got one guitar with a JB in the bridge and another with a Jazz in the neck, put both in this one. Then you'll look for another guitar to put a 59 and C5 in so you'll have all your combos

However, keep in mind that a lot of 80s Glam was recorded with traditional setups - Les Paul and Strat through Marshalls and pedals and whatnot, even up to Whitesnake's late-80s albums.

1984 was the only major album I'm aware of that actually featured a Duncan (noticeable tone change from previous albums, but still using the same amp).

Lynch and DeMartini were known to use Duncans at the time, but they used various models (at least until Lynch had the Demon made).

That said, you might consider the Screamin Demon, or Full Shred.

Just because it's an Ibanez doesn't mean it has to have DiMarzios, or that DiMarzios will sound better in it.

Are you questioning my chops? I have pretty good chops and a great rack! (you decide what that means)

Re: Whoever suggested I try the stock pickups in my new guitar for a while

Either way, I'm pretty sure my rack isn't as good as yours...

This is all that's in my rack at present
