Whola lotta Humbucker bridge vs Dimarzio 36th bridge

Anyone with experience with these two? It seems the WLH has a more even freq response than the 59, which should make it pretty close the 36th in voicing, no?

Re: Whola lotta Humbucker bridge vs Dimarzio 36th bridge

Yeah they are similar in that they are both "middy", I thought the 36th seemed a little smoother and brighter, and the wlh had a bit rougher voice to it.

Re: Whola lotta Humbucker bridge vs Dimarzio 36th bridge

as much as I love the whole lotta humbucker, I think the 36th holds together better with higher ( Metallica ) levels of gain, just not as fuzzed out sounding, I think that sound gives the WLH a great voice for classic rock and hard rock/grunge tones though

The 36th Ann. sounds a bit airier, spongier and lighter. The WLH sounds heavier, tighter with a harder edged tone.
I personally liked the WLH set better for the heavier stuff.

Funny how we hear things differently!!! Not to mention types of guitars and amps, etc. Actually I think Dimarzio has silently re-released the Virtual Hot PAF. There is a seller on EBay selling new ones in Black and cream, I bought a black one and it came in the current dimarzio packaging, modern label on the bottom etc. or maybe they had a stash of them left back in the warehouse somewhere. That to me is a much more aggressive PAF vibe, sort of first VH album, but with incredible clean tones, almost like an acoustic. It does the high gain better than either one of the two pickups we are talking about. Only drawback might be that the highs would rip your face off in a bright guitar.

are you guys testing these in Les Pauls? the guitar and pickup i want to swap out is a bridge 57 classic in a 335.
(Just doesn't have enough raunch on the wound strings for me, loose low end);

Re: Whola lotta Humbucker bridge vs Dimarzio 36th bridge

Had the 36th Ann. set and WLH in my LP Custom. The WLH currently resides in my SG.

The 36th Ann. has a grittier top end with lots of harmonics (and I mean lots).
The WLH is clearer with a firmer bottom end.

There's some good reports on here somewhere about the WLH set in a 335.

57 classic or 57+?

Re: Whola lotta Humbucker bridge vs Dimarzio 36th bridge

I couldn't get the '57 Classic out of the bridge of my ES-335 fast enough, I replaced it with a SD '59, it does the job ( a lot tighter and clearer with gain than the '57), but I'm still not satisfied enough to stop looking.. The two pickups I was going to try are the same two you are, I've been recommended the Whole Lotta Humbucker a couple times here for the bridge of a 335. I think I need to stop procrastinating and just grab one of those already.

When you say Metallica levels of gain, do you mean post Master of Puppets tone? I actually don't really care for that tone, I like the tone on Ride the Lightning best. MOP on is too scooped sounding for me.

Re: Whola lotta Humbucker bridge vs Dimarzio 36th bridge

Yeah to me I love the ride the lightning tones, i think you can get pretty close to ride the lightning with either pickup if you boost it a little on the front end ( I use an MXR super badass distortion, with the gain really low as a boost). Justice was mega scooped, and the Load albums .... Well I can't remember because I haven't heard them in years!

Well James used an Invader and (supposedly) an Allan Holdsworth model in the bridge in those days. The latter is basically a JB with double screw coils from what I understand.
That said, I've played along RTL with my SG and it fit nicely (Marshall boosted with a Distortion +). Haven't heard of any one thrashing out on a 335 though :).
