Whole Lotta Humbucker Neck

How's the WLH neck pickup with overdrive? It seems like it may be wound hot-ish. I was wondering if it gets muddy when used with overdrive. Thanks.

Re: Whole Lotta Humbucker Neck

I've had them in an all mahog prs and my 90 Les paul, outstanding in both, the notes stay large if that makes any sense, the single notes remain clear and powerful at least in my gee tars. Much better than the 59 for that application.

Not muddy to my ears. I have one in a les paul and every one who has played it has commented on how good the neck pu sounds.

Re: Whole Lotta Humbucker Neck

Which PU do you have in the bridge? I too have ordered the WLH for the neck of a Les Paul Studio (along with a Pearly Gates for the bridge). I hope I have done the right thing. These PUs aren't cheap and don't have any takers in my neck of the woods (aka India).

Re: Whole Lotta Humbucker Neck

they are going to be two fairly different pups but i think both are great. the pgn is pretty different than the pgb too and i love that set

Awesome neck pickup. I have thrown every type distortion and fuzz at it and it sounds wonderful every time. Very beautiful with a naturaly pushed over-driven tube tone.

When you look at the millivolt output ratings, the WLH set is one of the lowest output humbuckers SD makes. Think of a '59 with the upper mids and highs dampened a bit and the boomy bass dampened as well.

It all depends on what rig you use, what your target tone is, how good your hearing is and how much treble you are into.

The WLH set is very mild but that mildness shouldn't be confused with muddiness.

i saw that and was somewhat surprised, as i replaced a set of 59s with the WLH set and found the WLH to feel hotter than the 59s. the extra midrange really gives it an extra oomph the 59s were lacking.

Re: Whole Lotta Humbucker Neck

How would the wlh neck sound with a black winter bridge? Would the black winter be too hot?

Had no problem with mud in a LP Custom and SG through Marshalls and Mesas. Tried it with various overdrives, distortions, fuzzes and the amps themself. Kinda throaty sounding with defined attack.

Well that just makes me want one even more than I already do.

I bought a set with covers for my PRS DGT. I liked the tone of the guitar but thought the bridge could be a tad brighter and the neck clearer with overdrive. The WLH set did the trick! Great sounding pickups. The neck sounds perfect with overdrive.
