Why am I GASsing for an Analogman or Keeley modded Boss?

When it comes to gain, I really am an "amp" guy, I really like the tones I can get straight from the amp. I love fuzz pedals too, but the only ODs I have are a Wylde and a Flamingo Fuzz (more of an OD, really) and the only distortion box I really have is a Lava Box which I'm kind of lukewarm on (other than the MT-2 that every kid eventually gets ;)). I was browsing Mike's site contemplating which pedal I should order from him first (I've decided I need a Sun Face and a Beano Boost) and I ran across his modded Boss pedals. That then led me to Keeley's page of course and for some reason I'm GASsing for one of thier modded Boss pedals! Inexplicable, but I think I could really use one to get a little more compression and singing sustain from my amps' gain channels.

The clip I heard of Keeley's BD-2 with his compressor sounds outstanding, but I'm wondering if it will really do what I'm looking for? How do you guys use a modded DS-1 or TS-9/SD-1 or BD-2? Can a DS-1 be run into a distorting amp or do you get that quiet compressed feeling that some fuzzes do to an overly distorting amp? I know this is an incredibly broad and vauge question, but what do you guy with experience use and recommend and why?

Don't buy effects just because you think you need them...what do you want them for???

On the topic of modded pedals they can be great...that said I have never been much on Keeley's mods, now Analog Mike's mods are much more in tune with what I want to hear. If you want to add an OD pedal to run in front of an already crunchy amp I think that the analogman SD-1 or the analogman TS-9 are both great choices...

lol, a DO pedal.....

Re: Why am I GASsing for an Analogman or Keeley modded Boss?

DO play...yeah now that would be something!
Analougemans SD-1 silvermod sounds great!!!!
If you do not have the patience waiting for a KOT, get the Silvermod SD-1!

Re: Why am I GASsing for an Analogman or Keeley modded Boss?

have you tried the silver mod? i have planned on getting either my boss sd1 or vox valvetone modded that way but i always talk myself out of it.

Talk yourself in again Jeremy:D
It is....scccchhhweeeeeeeettt!

Tried a SD- silvermod..man some great oldschool tones, very nice drive!
Timeless tone!

i guess you just talked me back into it :)

thanks :smack:

Re: Why am I GASsing for an Analogman or Keeley modded Boss?

no worries, this ones easy. since i already own the pedal the gf wont notice :)

the extra amp i showed up with, that she noticed. the celestion gold i put in my deluxe, that she noticed, this i can get away with

I dunno man. I've never heard a "mod" that totally blew me away.

I can tell you that the Keeley Mod DS1 sounds pretty unimpressive. So many of these mods are just tweaks on a decent pedal, when you could just buy a better, higher quality pedal for not much more.

Save your money and go for a botique pedal.

MI audio Crunchbox: DS1 Killer. Hands down. around $100 bucks

Barber Direct Drive: ridiculously awesome high gain OD $120
Barber Small Fry: really amp like medium high gain OD $150

MXR Distortion III: Great budget distortion, way darker and fatter and more amplike than a DS1. $80

I guess I'm not TOTALLY against mods, but I guess I'm from the schoolof thought that's like, instead of trying to fix a pedal and change it, just get one that sounds great to begin with.

This is so funny, I have to do this kind of $$$ shuffle when it comes to guitar purchases. If I can pay for it with cash, and it doesn't take up any more room in our apartment then I'm good to go if not, then it's a long talk as to why I NEEEEED IT! A discussion I usually come up short on more times than not.

Sorry...but you know...boutique pedals...are mostly "modded" pedals...in all its basic glory!!
Circuits are not changed, it is all about trimming it in to the tones you want!
Adding some features, is not changing the circuit!
Take a Plexitone or an AC-Tone...basicly they are derived from the standart TS or SD style circuit...the real main difference is how it is powered, and what parts are used!
There are only so many ways to achive overdrive and distortion.
One is not going to reinvent the wheel to achive this!!

i usually take the 'forgiveness is easier than permission' plan of attack but since i just got on her about her stoopud crap, im trying to appear good :bigok: weve been together for about 8 years and she knows more about gear and tone than a bunch of people on this board so she notices when even little things show up

i understand your point but a ds1 is also $40 brand new all day long so for $100 you better get something that will kill it.

i have a barber ltd and when running at 18v it is the best overdrive i own but i only paid $60 for it

Re: Why am I GASsing for an Analogman or Keeley modded Boss?

Years ago I used to run a modded DS-1 with a CS-3 compressor through the clean channel of a Sovtek Mig 60. It sounded great for a little set-up like that. You can get very versatile sounds from it compared to a lot of amp options out there.

Since then I bought a mesa, sold that, and got a bassman, so now Im thinking about adding a keeley to my board again

I hear a lot of people running their stomps at 18v now. What would you say is the difference, more headroom, smoother tone? Haven't really had anyone pin this down.

Re: Why am I GASsing for an Analogman or Keeley modded Boss?

more headroom, less mid hump, more transparent, less gain
