Why are my Gibson minibuckers sqealing when I kick in my od pedal?

They have black plastic covers so they shouldn't be doing this right? I tried taking off the covers to take a look but I couldn't get them off. I don't want to use force and possibly screw them up because they are from 1974 and sound really good.

I have a gig tomorrow and I can't use this guitar now! :yell:

None of my other guitars do this exept the neck bucker in my LP where I put a cover on myself.

Sounds like the pickups are not wax potted?

Nope, I don't think they did that back in '74.
Don't want to pot them either, I like to keep them original as I don't want to mess with good sounding vintage humbuckers.
They only sqeal when I kick in my od pedal pushing the red channel.

i'd just say upgrade the pups next time you get a chance.. for now use less gain and stand as far as possible from the amp when the pedal's kicked in :burnout:

Noise gate?

Noise gates really do screw with your signal to noise ratios in a bad way...Always best to correct the source of a problem,rather than hide it behind a noise gate...

Thanks for the input guys, I apreciate it!
I took one of the covers off and the pickup looks looks pretty weird, the slug side looks like a coil from the hot rails and there are air gaps inbetween the polepieces, no black or cream bobbins covering it. I should post a picture sometime.
I'm playing a gig tonight so I'll just have to deal with it somehow.

Could the air gaps cause resonating in the pickup? I believe the idea of potting is to seal everything shut.

I have a 76 LP deluxe and it has the same problem. Those mini-buckers feed back something fierce under high gain.

The potting is to keep things from resonating...

It usually is something loose or something resonating or vibrating in the pickup. But often it's because guy's are playing at home or in the studio and standing very close to thier cranked up amp and often facing the amp....whereas if you were onstage you'd have your back to the amp and you'd probably be further away from the amp. Anyways, just try to get away from the amp...your ears will love you for it: especially when you're in your 40's or 50's. Lew

Last week I was standing in front of my amp about 5 feet or so away from it..The covered hummers in my LP were really giving me problems that night..That was the first night I was using the Plexitone pedal also,but I've since resolved all of those issues...:dance:

True, but my Duncan equipped axes have no unwanted feedback no matter how much gain, volume or how close I am in front of the amp facing it. Potting must be that important.

Glad your happy with the pedal, od's are very cool devices! I'm getting curious about the plexitone since everyone is raving about it.

You were playing with unpotted pickups?

Yes it does have a great sound though it tends to be a little on the dark side.

Um... I would avoid taking the covers off of those pickups. They can be ruined very easily.

They wouldn't fall apart when taking a cover off?

Almost everything is plastic it seems, it's amazing they sound so good! The windings seem to have a see through plastic cover over them.

I don't find them dark at all, more on the bright side and they have just the most beautiful sparkly cleans.

I too have a 1976 Les Paul Deluxe.... A brown sunburst finnished.... The pickups squealing drove me to remove them and i added Duncan firebird minis... I have since bought a set of the new Gibson replacements but have not installed them yet...

I had the pickups from 76 potted by a good local store and they were still squealing so i gave up on them.. This was years ago.... i have been thinking of going to The 12th Fret in Toronto again and have them try and fix them again..... They told me to bring them in... I'll have to get the original rings off the Duncans to add back to the original pickups....
