Why aren't Voxes more commonly used in metal?

I played an ac30, and it was f*ckin awesome for Sabbath (with the gain maxed). Why isn't it used more?

Too loose in the bottom.

+1

Also master volume AC-30s are a somewhat recent development. All of the originals and the UK reissues were non-master, so no 'gain' knob to speak of.

They're chimey cleanish amps with decent overdrive. Fine for 70s Sabbath but try some chuggachugga Slayer riffs and it's not quite there. They're great for everything from heavy rock, blues, country, the praise and worship church crowd loves them, but there are a lot of better choices for heavy rock and metal.

If i had to play a show through an AC30 i could make it work, but I'd rather have something more suited to heavier styles.

Well, sure, but it adds something to the sound.

Once again, if you're playing doom oriented metal or early metal like Black Sabbath, you could easily get away with a Vox. But the overall styles of metal don't mesh well with the flabby low end that the AC30 produces.

I will add that Ritchie Blackmore's tone on the first 5 Deep Purple albums was a 335 into an AC-30, and it was his best tone, and among my favorite tones of all time. His tone later (with Marshalls & strats) was good, but not as good. His tone now with Engls is my least favorite.

Wait, Ritchie Blackmore is using Engls? [emoji45]

Really? In Rock and Fireball were through a Vox? That is beyond legit. I suppose when I think on it I can hear some of the Vox saturated high-gain fizziness there.
I just picked up a Vox AC15 and I've been trying to pick out the Vox sound on songs/albums. I thought for sure the classic CCR stuff would be Vox but apparently it was all Fender and Kustom.

Just thought people might dig this photo (don't know the circumstances, though):

Re: Why aren't Voxes more commonly used in metal?

I don't think they get there. I feel they are very nice amps but for metal it wouldn't even make my list.

Re: Why aren't Voxes more commonly used in metal?

Ritchie also slaved his VOX AC-30 through his Marshalls.

Re: Why aren't Voxes more commonly used in metal?

Had my Turbo Rat running into the AC15 today and that is one hellacious combo. But yeah, it's hard to get the bottom end tight. It's almost always a little bit fizzy... But I think that's all the overtones that make the normal Vox clean /crunchy so compelling coming through.
