Why did Fender ever change from vintage style tuning pegs?

Re: Why did Fender ever change from vintage style tuning pegs?

i like Vintage style Fender Tuners for the way the strings go down the center of the shaft... but i've had a few start to rattle with the string vibrations over the years... thankfully my Custom Shop strat has yet to do that...

but in general i love modern locking tuners just for restringing ease... but i've heard locking tuners like Sperzels don't always work with a massive string sizes...

when i worked in a music store breifly they had me doing restrings a lot... at first i was a fish out of water... doing so many restrings was insane but every parent who's kid was taking lessons would pay to have their strings changed on their kids guitar... they showed me some cool ways to lock the strinsg on normal modern tuners... but saddly i forget now... it was simply warp and hook under the string and bend it over the string somehow... i never did it that way myself... the tech showed me to pull the string tight thru the nut and cut it 2 tuner lengths-(on Fender headstocks) past the one you plan to wrap it around...

That's exactly how I do it. Very neat and uniform. I learned it off the 'net somewhere. I honestly don't see many advantages to it over the "lock-wrap" method but, it looks a lot cleaner and I dig that (as does my OCD :lmao:). I haven't noticed any tuning problems either so, I still do it.:fing2:

I can't believe I've been playing guitar for nearly six years and I didn't know that. I guess you're always learning.

That was an awesome explanation. Thanks for taking the time to do that, man. :beerchug:

Anytime brother.

Dan Erlewine's books have tons of different stringing methods that make lots of sense, like the one you posted. A guy who posts on this forum sporadically that goes by the handle "octavedoctor" is really savvy when it comes to set ups and such and he made it a huge point that winding strings in a way that they lock themselves held the strings with more force than locking tuners themselves. I'm not so into it that I could actually tell the difference, but he made a very convincing explanation out of it.

Actually, if talking the same gauge, a wound string is lower mass and therefore lower tension, which will require less effort to play and bend.

Theoretically yes, but it really doesn't feel that way, the wound string feels more solid and less malleable than a plain string, I remember when I played rock and tried out larger strings it was more work with a wound g.

12-54 strings?

Yeah I know, what skinny sissy strings eh? :joke:
