Why did i ever take the custom out of my guitar? lol

what the hell was i thinking? My last custom broke on me for some reason, so i threw a JB in and didn't play the guitar for a while. I was gonna order a custom replacement but never did. I remember loving it, but the memory faded and i forgot how much i liked it. Anyway no matter what this guitar with the JB in it sounded like a MESSS, in the bass.....in the midrange.....and it was thin, and harsh even in a dark mahogany guitar, it was just buzzy and mushy, and muddy.
I didn't even reallize it, i have gone through some gear in this time that i probably would have loved had it not been for the JB. I was ALWAYS fighting my EQ trying to EQ something out, or in and now i know i was fighting the pickup.

Soon as i put the custom in chords rang out so clear, the bass was so tight, the sound was so balanced. Very full and clear i love it! I can now use the EQ on my amp to shape my tone, and not just using it to dial out thinness and harshness, and lack of high treble.

Leads are awesome and so fluid, rhythm is so crunchy and clear. Metal never sounded better. Like this way more than the distortion.

I was about to sell yet another amp, yet another cab. All because of a damn JB. NEVER AGAIN!!!!

This has made me realize i need to swap out my pickups in my other guitar. Any other pickups that you guys who like the custom also like as much if not more? I don't want any other customs, JB, distortion, PGb, invader, or dimebucker. ANd nothing higher output than the custom

More than anything this thread is about how terrible the JB is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The custom is a really good pickup, certainly not without its faults but compared to the JB its light years better!

I swaped out my custom out of my strat years ago to try and experiment with a bunch of other pickups and electronic setups... i ended up always going back to the custom when i wanted my guitar to sound "good" lol. That gutiar sound was and stil is stamped in my brain as one of the most kick ass fat strat tones.. not til recently ive found something i like as much if not more than the custom... the Custom shop 78 (neck version) i tried out of curiosity.. i pluged in and played just a few simple chords and let the strings ring into a mind blowing sound wave lol.. took just a few seconds and i instantly loved it, and with my setup anyways this thing is sounds awsome..

on a similar point as yours... i took it out and started messing with it, again out of curiosity, and i messed up my sound until i put it all back together and its working fine exept for a slight anoying hum i cant figure out.. nontheless it stil sounds awsome and made me realize something i already knew and forget each time... if it works and sounds great, dont touch it! lol Course then eventualy, if your like me, you get an itch to try and "improve" it more or see if you can.

the 78 probably has more of the qualities of the custom custom with less D.C. resistance.

As hot as the Custom is, it still sounds like a bulked up PAF, which means it has real tone. I'm digging the Custom/PG set a lot. It's a great combination in a Les Paul.

I asked which pup to match with my neck Gibson T-Top in my SG, and the forum gurus responded with the SH-5 Custom. They are absolutely right! Mag-F'in -nificnet!! Perfect match-great tone-not as nice as the Brobucker, but a better volume match...PERFECT volume match!

HOw does the Brobucker compare to the custom?

ANd has anyone here tried the jazz bridge? Is it as kick ass as the custom?

Re: Why did i ever take the custom out of my guitar? lol

you know the one thing that i'm reallizing (and remember from before) is the bass is almost a tad too much, and its not very defined. I think i remember others mentioning this too. Once i picked my other guitar up which has some incredible pickups in it (schecter USA pups) i reallized the custom was lacking the awesome clarity of the low end that the schecter pups have.

Overall i think the schecters are still my favorite pickups i've ever tried, i wish i knew of other pickups that had the clarity of those pickups, and the attack, and no buzz thing. Maybe its the huge slugs? lol

Okay so an update, so i lowered the bass side of the pickup slightly lower than the treble side and raised the poles up VERY SLIGHTLY on the bass side and sort of even them out all the way across. Now it sounds nice and balanced and the bass is much more defined and tighter. Lovin this pickup :)
