My Wolfgang QT has a locking nut and I'm wondering why is it even needed if the bridge is flush against the body. My Fender Strat doesn't have a locking nut and it stays in tune. Any reason to leave it on?
Re: Why do I need a locking nut on an against the body Floyd Rose?
Yes, unlike single locking trems you can do divebombs which can really give you tuning problems. The fact is the bridge will not be properly forced into the right place without the locking nut. It will still move a little or not return to place when picking hard, divebombing without the locking nut.
Re: Why do I need a locking nut on an against the body Floyd Rose?
The reason is that Floyd Rose nuts are not designed quite like regular nuts. You may be able to get away with locking tuners and no locking blocks, but I doubt it would stay in tune as well as a Floyd guitar with a locking nut. I do recall seeing graphite replacement nuts designed for this very purpose. That would be one option if you didn't want to use a locking nut, but I recommend you leave it as is.
