Why do people on other forums dislike the HRDx

I can't seem to figure out why. Outside of this forum, most people, really dislike the Fender HRDx. They sound fine to me, and I've heard reliability is much better than average. Also, they can be had for pretty cheap.

Why they hatin then?

Re: Why do people on other forums dislike the HRDx

people want marshall distortion from a gain channel. Anything else they think is wrong. No it's not quite that simple, but it's close.
Some people are more snobbish than others.

Re: Why do people on other forums dislike the HRDx

No idea. I've played a few, and I really liked them. It's my idea of a Fender I can rock with.

Re: Why do people on other forums dislike the HRDx

never tried it, but if slammer jammer digs it, I gotta try it. you didn't steer me wrong on the marshall jackhammer!

aside: losta peeps like the fender supersonic, but to me, it's not supersonic enough. it's almost gainy/rough enough, but not quite there.

They squash on the OD channel a bit much for me. Although I like a bit of squish, I also like a bit more of a bold OD tone than the HRDX has. The Super Sonic comes to mind...:scratchch

Re: Why do people on other forums dislike the HRDx

I agree the OD channel kinda sucks (notice kinda), but I think the cleans make up for it. Especially for an amp that can be had for >$400

I didn't even like the Jackhammer that much. (I like the Guv'nor Plus more.) Are you inspired to try things by my ambivalence regarding them?

Re: Why do people on other forums dislike the HRDx

It's too proletarian.

Also, the gain channel is a bit lackluster. Great working man's amp with pedals though.

They have an ok clean...I think there's a harsh high treble thing in there that I can never get rid of no matter how I turn the dials or try to dump the treble, so they make my ears tired.

I think they get written about a lot as the great pro level working man's amp, but there are other ones that do that same thing better for me. To me, they're more of an entry level good amp. Not great, but they get the job done.

hehe - I admit I just like saying "slammer jammer," and use it whenever I have the chance, even if it means misquoting. but I thought for sure you recommended the guv'nor or a jackhammer with equal opinion for a marshall-in-a-box sound. guess I got my forum members mixed up.

Re: Why do people on other forums dislike the HRDx

The bright highs out with some easy mods though. While we're on the subject, anyone have an idea of what might be better for the price, that is realistically attainable (not a rare vintage amp that sometimes pops up on ebay)?

I'm gonna be looking for an amp in a few weeks (I think), and want some opinions from my fellow forum bros. Just a general opinion though.

I think I might have said that the Jackhammer was pretty close for getting the TSL high-gain sound, or something like that. In that sense, it would be a recommendation, though I own a TSL100 and don't like the high-gain channel all that much. I prefer the crunch channel, which is more like a Guv'nor.

Anyway, I think the OD channel on the Hot Rod Deluxe is unfairly maligned. It's not a Marshall or a Mesa/Boogie, and it's not trying to be one. I really like it for blooze and classic rock with a Strat or Tele.

Re: Why do people on other forums dislike the HRDx

I like them just fine. They're usually a bargain for what they have to offer. If I were a 2-amp a/b switcher kinda guy, I'd probably own one.

Re: Why do people on other forums dislike the HRDx

The guy's on TFF have some major Snob issue's w/t the HRD.:eyecrazy: Yes, there have been reliability issue's, But ya get a 5 year warranty. And some of the problems have been resolved . After that from a techs point of view it's a pain to work on. If the reliability issue's are that frequent? Then Techs would make a mint fixing em' (So stop crying!) In 10 years I've owned my HRD I had to make 2 repairs. r78 & r79 are the usual suspect. If I had used staking compound to raise these resistors off the board the 1st time? I wouldn't had had to fix it again.:banghead:(these are price point amps!! Other complaints: The More Drive channel. Should have been omitted in the 1st reversion IMO. Now the Pluses: Affordable, World class Fender Cleans, a LOUD 40 watts, At 44Lbs. lighter than most 1x12" Tube combo's, EZ to adjust Bias w/t a DMM And takes pedals well. Justin Holten's site was a wealth of information.Fender should pay him to put it back up !!

Re: Why do people on other forums dislike the HRDx

That's a nice little amp. When I owned one, I did a bunch of gigs with it and it was solid as a rock. It's plenty loud with lots of headroom. The HRD sounds bigger than other 1x12s that I've owned. It certainly does not sound like a Marshall so don't try and fool Mother Nature with it. It sounds like a Fender.

Re: Why do people on other forums dislike the HRDx

I nearly bought one a few years ago when I was looking for a new amp. The cleans on those amps are pretty decent . . . gain channel wasn't really to my liking however. I have heard many complains on the internet about reliability issues as well, which made me a bit leery. I wouldn't say it was a bad amp by any stretch of the imagination though . . .

Re: Why do people on other forums dislike the HRDx

The cons:
1. the cabinet rattles sometimes with the low frequencies.
2. The stock speaker is just lame.
3. The clean volume knob is way touchy.
4.The reverb splashes a lot.

The pros:
1. They are excellent sounding and versatile amp circuits.
2. There is a lot of information out there on easy reversible mods to volume pots and reverb etc.
3. A warmer speaker makes them sound amazing.
4. I like the dirty channel - especially with a Les Paul or similar.

The other cons:
1. some people like to spend more money than the cost of an HRD because they think it makes them play better.
2. Some people don't like to use popular gear because they want to be different.
3. It doesn't sound like a marshall.

The other pros:
1. It does not cost an arm and a leg.
2. They are very popular and definitely pro level gear.
3.It doesn't sound like a marshall.

Re: Why do people on other forums dislike the HRDx

The gain channels are really thin.

The clean channel is excellent and full, but the gain channels are unusably bad.

I use the fat-ass clean channel and distortion boxes with mine for that reason. Sounds good to me. ('96 DeVille 2x12).

Re: Why do people on other forums dislike the HRDx

There are guitarist out there that do not use the amp for the purpose it was made for; such as trying to make a MESA sound like a Marshall, a fender sound like a Marshall, trying to play heavy metal on a Fender, etc. It's like those kids that will do so much body work on a Cavalier to try to make it look like a civic. It's not happening. Use the money you invested on an actual civic instead of a cheap knock off. But I digress.....

Like many have said they are really good, solid amps. If they weren't, they wouldn't be around. Lots of musicians at one point of time use them or know someone who used it. I'm not a Fender guy, it's just not me but would I rock one if it was given to me or as a practice amp if I could pick it up second hand, yes i would. Would I get pissed and flame it when it doesn't give me a modern rock sound I'm looking for, NO because I know what style it would work real well with and not try to take it out of it's element.
