I HATE mine! It's all muddy and bassy for me, and I've tried adjusting the pole pieces, height, and everything else I could think of. Sure, cleans are great, but the distortion BLOWS IMO.

What do you guys like so much about it?

Re: Why Do So Many People Love The 59N For Distorton?

actually the one i have could use a little more bass IMO, but i still really dig it. its probably just the guitar being overly bright (which it is compared to most mahogany)

Re: Why Do So Many People Love The 59N For Distorton?

The pickup needs the support of a good amp. It's mega popular for a reason.

Re: Why Do So Many People Love The 59N For Distorton?

You mean...my XXX isn't a good amp??? aww ****....there goes 900 bucks down the drain...;)

Re: Why Do So Many People Love The 59N For Distorton?

Depending ... it's uses are fairly specific I find ...

For metal it tends to suck unless you're looking for thick.

But for Blues, Jazz, Classic Rock ... it has this beautiful sweet tone that rules for soloing and chord work under light to medium gain. High gain kills and "chokes" the pickup from my experience.

Re: Why Do So Many People Love The 59N For Distorton?

My amp settings are Lows at 10, Mids at 5, highs at 7, on an active EQ and a very middy amp. I'm going for metal tones, very clear and articulate ones though, a la Jeff Loomis. Guess that's why...

Re: Why Do So Many People Love The 59N For Distorton?

yeah, the XXX is extremely middy. but youve had it for just a few days so give it time for tweaking and the '59n should work fine for you

Re: Why Do So Many People Love The 59N For Distorton?

I know my amp sucks, but I've never been thrilled with the distorted sounds out of the 59N either.

Re: Why Do So Many People Love The 59N For Distorton?

Lows at 10!!! I think we found the mystery to why you're 59 is muddy! Most likely, a muddy amp won't do good for a pickup with a thick bottom end. Have you tried any other neck pups by any chance? Just for comparison? I think you'd find most of them will be muddy!

Re: Why Do So Many People Love The 59N For Distorton?

 :laugh2: Or buy a subwoofer :laugh2: :burnout:
Actually it also does not like when you do not dig into the strings, it suits a certain style, so if you just shred away with a light touch, not much will happend, gotta play it.

yeah tunr those mids up even more!!!!!!!! :haha:

try a different setting, like mids 7 bass 5 treble 5 and gain at like 5 or something

Re: Why Do So Many People Love The 59N For Distorton?

i agree - lows at 10???????????

start with an even EQ, 5 all round, and shape your tone by ear.

keep the gain a bit lower (somewhere between 3 and 5) and when you got the eq sorted, wind up the gain to where you want it. thats how i set my eq

Re: Why Do So Many People Love The 59N For Distorton?

If need be, a PG will have a much lighter low end. I do agree with the others though that 10 is entirely too high on the lows. THat amp has active eq and you are just OD'ing the lows.

Re: Why Do So Many People Love The 59N For Distorton?

I'm not a big fan of the '59N personally. Regardless of the height I've set it at it's still to bassy and warm for good cleans IMO. And with distortion it's muddy IMO...and I've used it with several amps.

But again this is only IMO. I would like to try an alnico pro II to see if that would help out. Maybe even a PGn

You're playing neck pickup, with fairly high gain, and you've cranked the bass, semi-scooped the mids and you wonder why your tone is muddy? No real mystery here...

Plus you said it's an 'active' EQ? Which means at 10 it is ADDING extra lows...

Try to cut down on the lows and forget scooping mids...

I'd try your settings on everything on 12 o clock and adjust from there (ie everything on 5 and then adjust slightly step by step...)

Re: Why Do So Many People Love The 59N For Distorton?

i dont like the XXX .. well at least not the combo version. or maybe i expected too much from it.

i got a very ****ty amp and the 59n shines. it's hard to EQ it, thats true, especially if you got a JB in the bridge.

but your settings should be a frown type and not a paf type EQ.. medium bass, high mids and medium treble

Re: Why Do So Many People Love The 59N For Distorton?

Bass on 10??

Maybe your bridge is too thin and that skews the balance. Have you tried raising your bridge pickup and lowering the neck pickup a little?

Re: Why Do So Many People Love The 59N For Distorton?

I do set my controls starting at 5. The XXX is a very very middy amp, like EX-250 said, so my mids aren't scooped at all. The lows are at 10 because that's the only place I get my chunk and thickness at.

The bridge pickup is as high as it goes without touching strings at the 24th fret (yeah, I do use it a lot actually). Maybe the DD is just thin?

I guess it just goes to show to each his own. It's really just too bassy for me, so if anyone has a Jazz N or FSn, JB, hell, even an DDn, I'd looove to trade!

Re: Why Do So Many People Love The 59N For Distorton?

i think the DD is kinda thin, i never really like it. i like the custom much better
