i experimented them both on the same fret while doing bends.
why does ernie ball keep eating my frets! :yell: :yell:

im about to yank the ernie balls out of my guitar right now! :yell:

Re: why is ernie ball eating my frets???

How bad man? I actually think EB's are softer on frets than D'addario's are. Bigger string size? Are you sure they are, and you're just not imagining it because it's not your favorite string brand, so you're looking for a reason not to like 'em? :D

Re: why is ernie ball eating my frets???

Are they clean? Ive been using EB 11-48s and not problems. have 9-42 on my other guitar, again no munching goin on there. Im moving to Rotosounds soon anyway because theyre the same guage at a tad cheaper.

Well, then it's the string compistition. I guess that EB's have more steel that D's. The only thing you can really do about it is to switch to something different.

Re: why is ernie ball eating my frets???

Are you using the Stainless steel strings? Those will eat frets all day long!

Try going to a pure nickel wrap and your frets will last longer.

Re: why is ernie ball eating my frets???

I swear by 10-46 nickel wrapped D'addarios, and I'm not the only one I know. I used to use EB's. I do recall seeing my frets are little worn after using Balls. I found that D'addarios are smoother feeling and less sterile sounding. They are still capable of wearing out frets, but nowhere near what the Balls did! I think this might have to do with their anti-tarnish packaging, where as EB's are packed in paper then in vinyl. I normally found them to be tarnished before they even got on my guitar! I'm not trying to bash Ernie Ball, but this is what I've noticed.

Re: why is ernie ball eating my frets???

What kind of guitar, and what kind of strings? Stainless steel strings will cause the frets to wear faster than nickel strings. Pure nickel will cause the least wear. The problem may be the frets themselves, some cheaper guitars may have softer fretwire.

yes, thats what i thought, the packaging(d's have them to prevent corrosion or something.)

i polished my frets yesterday too, now its all shiny and nice. maybe i was grinding down on dirt which i had mistaken for frets.

but that's not gonna stop be from going back to d's.

btw, i wasn't using stainless steel strings.

Re: why is ernie ball eating my frets???

i have used eb for all of my guitars life
i now realise why i have no frets left. i may now change 2 pure nickle.
are they more expensive or harder 2 play?

Re: why is ernie ball eating my frets???

I only use stainless steel strings and they WILL tear up frets. I just resigned myself to the fact that I need to redress/refret every so often.

Re: why is ernie ball eating my frets???

what kind of guitars do you have anyway? don't put all the blame to the strings sometimes (or most of the time?) its the frets themselves too have a problem.

Re: why is ernie ball eating my frets???

doesn't eb make a total nickel wrap? the classic slinkeys?? or is it not all nickel?

Re: why is ernie ball eating my frets???

Try the 2253 Pure Nickel Super Slinkys. Tin plated steel hex core with pure nickel wrap. I can't imagin there being a huge difference between strings. You guys sure you're not just noticing you have fret wear? I've been using the Hybrids for some time and don't notice them "eating" through my frets anymore then the D'addarios they replaced.
