Why not a 59 plus?

We have pearly gates and pearly gates plus, gibson 57 classic and 57 classic plus...
Why not to have without going to custom shop...a regular production 59 wound to say at 9.5 or 10k?
Until bobbins are full...
Same pick up..same magnet...only overwound..regular production.

Re: Why not a 59 plus?

That's what they started with in the development of the Demon. In the end though, one bobbin got allen screws and the wire is 43AWG rather than 42AWG (not to mention different wire type). So, in a way it is a '59 plus and in a way it is not. Depends on how you look at it.

The PG and PG Plus are the same exact pickup, the only difference between them being the magnet (A2 or A5). There's no overwinding there between the two.

Re: Why not a 59 plus?

Wouldn't a '59 Plus basically be a Pearly Gates Plus? The Pearly Gates Plus is wound a bit hotter and has slightly more mids. It's great for guitars that don't naturally have a lot of body.

'59 Plus Bridge: Pearly Gates Plus
'59 Plus Neck: '59 Bridge

Re: Why not a 59 plus?

am i blind?? cause i haven´t seen or heard of the Pealy Gates plus earlier, please post a link if you know were to find it

Re: Why not a 59 plus?

Ahhh, had a look for it and figured that the big change is the alnico 5 magnet instead of the alnico 2, so no thank you..
I´m searching for pikcups with alnico 2 but **** hard to find one with a dc around 9-11.
Thanks anyway

Re: Why not a 59 plus?

i don't think that screamin demon is what i've in mind..too much difference..and if you look at the tone chart it has an higher resonance peak that make it more trebly than a regular 59...an overwound pick up sounds less trebly..
i'm simply speaking to take the leesona and set it for a 9.5k 59.
nothing more...
i don't think seymour duncan has something similar in production..in the regular line.. quite simple and fast thing to do.
i think it's a good idea..
a little bit like the 57 classic and 57 classic plus, or the burstbucker 1, 2 and 3.
then you have 59n at about 7.3 - 7.4..59b at about 8.2k and the 59 plus at 9.5k
thinking even more that is a winning idea..they don't have to change nothing on the pick up...only the turn of wire

Guru, with all due respect my forum brother...

I made this same post, with the same idea, about 2-3 years ago (Except I said to call it The 60 hahaha) ... and many have made it before and since then.

I agree with you 100%. It's a really, really simple idea to do. And there's LOTS of people who would want it. And it would probably balance out better with the 59 neck than the 59 bridge already does... but...

I think Seymour has strong feelings on "sweet spots" for windings and different guages. And for some reason, 42 guage wound up to 10 doesn't really do it for him.

That being said, Closest thing is the Brobucker. Forumites proposed it, Duncan built it. Custom Shop only, but lots of people here LOVE it.

Re: Why not a 59 plus?

The Alnico 5 magnet generally ads more mids and warmth in my opinion or atleast thats what i think. But the alnico 2 magnet won´t pull the strings as much as a alnico 5 magnet. Both the alnico 2 and alnico 5 are great stuff, but i guess the alnico 5 is the more modern way of creating a PAF pickup.

have it, dig it

that said my tele has a pg+/59 set and i like it a lot. I wanna try a neck version of the pg+, i bet it'd sound pretty good.

fwiw, A2 pickups are almost always warmer and middier than the equivalent pickup with an A5 magnet. A5 magnets tend to give a slightly scooped response, while A2 magnets give the opposite.

Re: Why not a 59 plus?

How about the 78 model. Its 9k with 42 wire and A2 mag but sounds really open and alive for a A2 pu. You could put a A5 in it.

Re: Why not a 59 plus?

I hesitate writing about pickups I've not directly used or heard, however based on the how it was developed and the final specs, it seems that the Brobucker fits the bill.

Demon? It's PAFish but it's brighter and more compressed than the '59. The two may be related, but they are second cousins at best, IMO.

Re: Why not a 59 plus?

I think a Brobucker with a fully charge A5 would be the closest bet. It's 42AWG, same as the '59, and I believe the same wire type as the '59. However, the Brobucker is a Custom Shop pickup now and the OP was asking about a non-Custom Shop pickup.

The 78 is a very cool pickup. It has a very "chewy" (to rip off Lew's word) midrange and an overall aggressive sound. It's really hard to describe, but it feels very alive and sensitive under your fingers. The 78 is VERY different from the Brobucker like the difference betwen a 59 and a Seth. The Brobucker's wire is the same used in the 59 (plain enamel) and the 78 uses something else...I'm guessing formvar.
