I've noticed that some of you fellows have quite a personal guitar collection going and I was just wondering why so many? Don't get me wrong because I'm not at all knocking anyone. Did you buy them as a future investment? Are you professional full time players or studio musicians who need a lot of differant sounds? Just wondering, thats all. Peace.

Hey Mike, nice to see another Michigan guy on the boards. I have a dozen or so guitars here at the house. The closest thing to an honest answer is that I wanted them, so I bought them. I started out with a Les Paul, but then decided I really wanted a Strat as well. Afterall, nothing sounds like a Strat. Then I needed a Llocking trem guitar for a couple of songs so I picked up a mid 80s RG 550. Then I had a LP go down the day of a show, so I bought another. I realized then that I didn't have a flametop, so I bought a 59 historic RI LP.
One day I decided that having a Tele was a good thing (same thinking as the Strat - nothing sounds like a Tele) so I bought one of those. A couple of months later I bought a PRS CU 24 because all the other kids had one.
Everyone needs an electric/acoustic and a bass so I bought those as well. It really boils down to having a bad case of the gimmees and too much cash on hand, but I claim they all serve a purpose. In all honesty I could sell everything but my 3 LPs, my bass and my acoustic and be perfectly happy and I'm in the process of selling off a couple of guitars now, but only because I got bit by the high end recording gear bug.

robert summed it up ... i have 3 electrics (1 solidbody hardtail, 1 solibody trem, one semihollow hardtail), 2 acoustics (6 and 12, both gifts 20+ yrs ago from my late grandfather who played and taught me a bunch), and a inexpensive bass ... i'd like a handful more (strat, tele, ricky12, ricky6, LP, jazz archtop) ...
but i can wait .. they're just toys

There are several reasons to buy / have many guitars :
addiction, passion, inspiration....
I never resist when I try a guitar that is huge. I never had money to have something else than a crappy axe when I was young, so now I buy every axe I dreamed of in the past.
I play every guitar that I own and it's a source of pleasure and inspiration every time I pick them up !

Each guitar to a degree has a unique voice. Different woods, thickness, and pickups all play a part in why they sound the way they do. As a player we are always searching for something that sounds the way we hear it in our heads. (this has driven many of us Insane). So the search continues for perfection in sound, playability, and looks. I don't believe I will ever say I am done buying guitars. I am always one guitar away from a "perfect collection"

Like Robert, I could sell pretty much all of my guitars and amps and get along fine with just the Tele, the Martin and the Deluxe Reverb.

i only have 2 guitars at the moment.... but i can tell you, even though i just made a big purchase with my new amp, i'm already planning to get another guitar. 
I guess its just that they look different, and you can have them set up with different pickups and stuff for your different styles......

Basically, a little of what everyone here has said! But right now, I'm selling off a couple & narrowing everything down to:
1 LP
2 Teles (1 Anniversary Fender/1 home-made Tex-Mex)
1 P-bass
1 Acoustic/electric (IN SEARCH OF !)
Each has it's own voice & character and it's really fun to play each one.
It's like any other hobby for me though, only I've come to grips with it lately & just trying to settle in with what I've got.

I have 3 guitars...if I could afford I'd buy every guitar that I really like...its my weakness I cannot resist good guitars...well some people like clothes,some like perfumes,some like computers etc...and I like guitars...when I hold a guitar in my hands I feel joy,happiness and feel really better...I can't describe the feeling,its the same feeling that you have something that you want very bad and finally have it...its the same feeling when you buy a new car...playing a Gibson LP is like driving a Mustang though I've never driven one but played LP :1:
if I'm having bad times or just feel bad I'd take and play one of my guitars and immediately began to feel better...I think everyone should do the things that they like the most...its the perfect way to relax and feel better...

Well, I used to feel the same way as you. I owned nothing but an old Ovation acoustic for many many years. I was riding around with a friend at work one day, taking a very long trip and he got to talking about all his guitars.
I seriously asked him the same question... "why do you need more than one"
He laughed.
Then the sickness/madness/obsession began for me. He sold me my first electric that I had had in years. Epi Les Paul. I started lookig at putting some Gibson aftermarket pups into it. This buddy of mine then turned me onto Seymour Duncan. The rest is history as they say.
If you feel like you can be happy with one guitar, then that is cool. I'd strongly advise you to not hang out here because this sickness we call GAS is very contagious. You have been warned.

Oh and now the obsession has turned it's green envied eye towards amplifiers. I've gone from being a one amp guy to now ordering a custom built amp and making my own amp.
I'm currently looking to add a Vox to the stable as well. Gotta have an amp from all the major food groups you know.

i have bought 4 new 1s in the past few months.... i have also sold a few in that time also. I have 8 guitars right now and i want to get rid of some..... i just cant find a reaason to get rid of any of them. They all offer me diffrent things.
maybe i should sell all my stuff and buy an electric and acoustic variac
