Wicked combinations ?

I was just thinking, besides the many people using a JB-Jazz combination, there are others who try out some crazy stuff that turns out to kick ass. So, if you have any wicked pickup configurations, just post and describe them (styles you play, sound it makes). You know, for the people "I git this npickup in the bridge and I dunno which one for the neck to get this and that kind of sound".

Also, if you're just wondering whether or not you should buy a certain pickup, you may ask here if anybody already tried it, to see what sound it gives, if it's worth trying or not.

Hope this can be both funny and useful ! Post ahead !

I'd start off asking if someone could tell me what a TB-5/SH-1N spits in a mahogany guitar. Br00tz rhythm and mellow cleans ? :D

Re: Wicked combinations ?

I used to use a JB/JB combo. :D

On the neck the JB has to be set real low though. It's a monster neck pickup.
And you should really have a coil split option in there somewhere to make the most out of them.

Re: Wicked combinations ?

Here's a couple for ya. I play mostly blues and rock through a Fender Blues Jr. and a Li'l Dawg Champster.

Re: Wicked combinations ?

I've been looking for such a Tele for quite a long time now, with a P90 in the neck. I already found one with dual P90s, but none with a Tele bridge pickup yet. That would be cool I guess :D

Re: Wicked combinations ?

Full Shred N, Screamin' Demon B - has a nice wide range of tones, and the SD gives the FS a nice kick in the middle position. Guitar: Warmoth Tele 72 Thinline. Styles: rock & pop.

I'm so close to being on the same page with you here:

SH Tele with a Jerry Donahue bridge and a Phat Cat neck. One of my favorites. I swapped out the JD for an Antiquity, and even though I love the Antiquity . . . I want the JD back.

Re: Wicked combinations ?

Mix and match any of these:

Neck/Middle: Surfer or SSL1 with

Bridge: Texas Hot Custom, SSL5, SSL6 or Twangbanger

Mix and match any of these:

Neck: PGn, '59n, AIIPn
Bridge: Custom Custom, Custom 5, Custom, Brobucker, '78.

or the neck models with the respective bridge models (PGb, '59b, AIIPb)

PAF/Super Distortion
Air Norton/Tone Zone

EMG 85/81
EMG 81/85
EMG 85/85
EMG 81/81

Edit: These are just classic combos that seem to work for a lot of people off the top of my head.

Re: Wicked combinations ?

I'm still partial to the CRn and Screamin' Demon. I miss that combo.

Re: Wicked combinations ?

+1 on the JB + JB,

59 ceramic + 59 bridge in the neck,

A friend of mine is really digging his Invader bridge with Stag Mag lately,

PAF pro with El Diabo or Dimebucker......

Re: Wicked combinations ?

Steve's Special / Air Norton (basswood's greatest combo)

59b / PGn (mahogany)

Super Distortion / PAF Pro (alder)

Custom (C,II,V) / AP2n

Re: Wicked combinations ?

All with 500k pots/mahogany+maple:

JB and '59n--'59n works well for a second solo voice with high gain
Full Shred and '59n--wicked middle position tones
JB and Distortion neck--DDn is versatile for rhythm and lead, snappy

Super Distortion and PAF Pro

As always, your mileage may vary....

Re: Wicked combinations ?

El Diablo/Air Norton
Ironman/Liquifire
Super D/PAF Pro

C#/Drop B tunings, heavy strings

Chaotic, spazzy, thrashy, sludgy metal riffage on the bridge pickup, splits for twangy Earth type stuff.

Sludge Doom riffage/Kerry King impressions on the neck.

Re: Wicked combinations ?

1989 Carvin DC127T, maple neck thru, maple sides, ebony fb and OFR with a JB(rca5) in the bridge and a Hotrails neck pickup. Both pickups have coil cut switches.
A VERY wicked combination.

Re: Wicked combinations ?

and one more,
A 1986 home built Kramer Focus 2000 with a overwound Norton in the bridge and a Air Norton in the neck.
Another wicked combination.

Re: Wicked combinations ?

my favourite strat combo at the mo is phat cat bridge, aps-1 middle & ssl-1 neck. master volume and master tone both 500k with resistors to make the singles see 250k pots.

another one of my faves is in my sg custom (3 pickup) i have a 59/C5 hybrid in the bridge, tonerider rebel 90B (phat cat clone) with 2 A5 mags instead of the stock A2's in the middle and a 59 in the neck. That's wired with a master tone which is also a push/push pot to turn the middle pickup on and off, and a volume for each pickup. these are probably the most versatile guitars i own.
I play mainly classic rock, blues, punk, ska and reggae and they cover all that and a LOT more with ease

Could you just explain what the point is to use 500 with res instead of a regular 250 ?

Re: Wicked combinations ?

I used the JB(neck) & Distortion(bridge) combo for a long time & loved it. But i put it back into the bridge of another guitar so am on the lookout for neck pickup.
