Winding my own pickup

Hi, this is my first post here. I’ve ordered a bobbin and a spool of 42 awg wire. I wrapped (by hand) it around my eyelet, then around the coil, and then it just snaps. Am I putting too much tension on the coil?

Re: Winding my own pickup

I imagine so - coil wire is mighty fine, and copper does not have a great deal of tensile strength.

Winding by hand is an ambitious project. Wishing you good luck.

Re: Winding my own pickup

yes, if you are breaking the wire you are putting too much tension on it

Re: Winding my own pickup

This initial period will be immensely frustrating.....not in the least that hand wrapping is 100x harder than having some form of automation - good luck!!

But the rewards may be worth it. I have three hand-wrapped Zhangbuckers - two humbuckers and a Strat bridge - and they have amazing air & detail.

I've been looking at those and I really want to give one a shot. I really need to buy more guitars....I have more pickups and pickups I want to buy than guitars. Back OT, I hear nothing but good things about those pure handwound pickups. One day before long.....

Re: Winding my own pickup

Thanks everyone. I’ve got my dad winding the coil and me unwinding the wire off of the spool, and we’ve gotten to 100 as of now.

Re: Winding my own pickup

if you are using #42 wire then you want 7000-10,000 turns for a single coil

Re: Winding my own pickup

If you aren't 100% set on winding it completely by hand, s nice sewing machine can be easily converted to a pickup winding machine if you know what you are doing.

Re: Winding my own pickup

hell, a record player can work too. you just need something to spin the bobbin around. you dont "need" to count the turns, just wind it till the bobbin is full or at least close. too little tension will give you a very microphonic pup fyi

Re: Winding my own pickup

I tried using a cordless drill but the spool wire doesn’t come off that clean and it kind of sticks to itself when I pull it off.
