Wiring an out of phase switch

When wiring an out of phase switch to put two humbuckers In and out of phase, does the DPDT switch have to be on-on or can it be on-off? How can you tell if a switch is on on or on off?

Thank you!

Re: Wiring an out of phase switch

It has to be on-on.
Sometimes the switch will say on-on or on-off on the side. You can always tell by using a meter.

Typically, an on-off will only have 4 terminals. An on-on will have six. After all, why would they install unused terminals? ;)

Re: Wiring an out of phase switch

Good point Artie. Plus most on/off switches are just 1P1T (hard to find a 2P1T).

Unless he was referring to on/on (or on/on/on) vs on/off/on.

Thanks guys. So knowing that (and knowing I don't have a meter) would you say this is an on-on switch judging by these photos?

That should be on-on. But doesn't the other side of the switch actually say that? Can you take a pic of the other side?

I would expect something like this: (Although, sometimes the cheap Chinese switches won't be labeled.)

Yes, we need to see the other side of the switch.

But nevertheless, that isn't an on/off switch. It is either on/on (if the switch has just two distinct positions) or on/on/on/, or on/off/on (if the lever has three distinct positions).
