Wiring help please?

Hi, all! Just registered today! Glad to see helpful forums like this one.

So today I'm going to buy a beautiful white schecter hellraiser with some ugly emgs in it, which I will soon rip out and replace with an sh-6 in the bridge and an sh-2n in the neck. I found out that these pups are coil-tappable, so I was planning on doing that, too.

I was planning on using 2 volumes, both push-pull for the coil tap, and one tone, with a basic, 3 way blade switch. I can't seem to find a wiring diagram on here that shows that configuration. The closest I got was this one:

Is that what I should do? Or is there another way I should wire these, like a combination of two other diagrams?

Re: Wiring help please?

You mean like the tone in the diagram I posted? Thanks bro, quick response, too.

If anyone else has any opinions, I'd be interested in those, as well.

Oh, and welcome to the forum.

This is a great place for expert advice and opinions. Forum bros have lots of knowledge, expertise, and experience.

Re: Wiring help please?

Alright, one more question: should I put the bridge grounding on the bridge volume pot or the tone pot? Does it matter?

Doesn't matter, although tradition is to the tone pot. BTW, congrats on yanking out the EMG's. You're much better off with passives.

Re: Wiring help please?

I use to love EMGs, but then I bought this Peavy 6505+ head here, and with an amp this hot, it doesn't matter if you have hot pups if they have no tone! The SH-6 is a hot pup with a wide variety of tones, and I can't wait to put it in!

Thanks guys. Any other advice? I have about a 50/50 record with correctly soldering things haha, I'd like to not have to spend $80 having a shop do it.

Re: Wiring help please?

General advice: Good lighting, a fan (for solder fumes), and do it when you're alert and not tired or dstracted. Take your time. If you get frustrated, come back later with a clear head. Look at the diagrams until they make sense. Everything (PU's, pots, toggle, and jack) has a hot and a ground wire connected to it. All the ground wires interconnect in a big network. The hot wres don't work that way though. If something doesn't have a ground wire attached, you get noise. If ground and hot wires touch, you get a short. To a novice a wire harness looks like spaghetti, but it's really very basic and logical. Take the mystery out of it.

With a coil cut for push-pull: you have 6 lugs on the PP box. The middle two stay the same, whether the push-pull is up or down, so what you're really changing when you lift it up is going from the bottom 2 lugs to the top 2 lugs (the middle two are always 'on'). Make sense? So you have wires from one coil of a PU that will connect with a ground wire when the push-pull is lifted, shorting it out, and leaving you only one functioning coil...coil cut! Voila. When the push-pull is down, those two PU wires aren't linked to a ground wire, so nothing is going on then. It's normal humbucker mode. No different than if they weren't on the push-pull.

Re: Wiring help please?

So, I should just go with the Guitar Doc's plan, then? Wire with the two PP vol pots and just send the tone knob thru it?
