Wiring help

I followed this diagram and the results are Pos 2 and 4 are NOT hum cancelling. I did flip the magnet on a pickup. Something tells me when you flip a magnet, the colors need to be changed as well. The diagram does not yield hum canceling. How to fix?

Re: Wiring help

You don't need to flip the magnet to be noise-cancelling with this setup... put it back the way you found it and you should be fine for noise cancelling. RW/RP doesn't really make much sense to me for humbuckers because they possess two coils, and one COIL is already RW/RP compared to the other.

Here's the kicker... are they both S-D pickups? If so, then they are designed to work in opposites... one having the North on "top" and the South on "bottom," and the other having the North on "bottom" and the South on "top." Splitting them in opposite ways (one North and the other South) WILL yield noise-cancelling, but they won't be inner coils or outer coils... just two "tops" and two "bottoms."

If you want to make them inner and outer, just flip one of the pickups over (so the logo is upside-down in comparison to the other one) and you'll have it.

If they're not S-D's or are from two different manufacturers, I would need to know specifically which pickups they are in order to look up their orientation and help out.

Hope that helps.

i actually tested it out before i flipped the magnet, so no that wont fix it. they are a '59 neck and Custom 5 bridge

I apologize... I looked at the diagram hastily before leaving work. That diagram will split to inside coils, but to either both North or both South. It WILL NOT be hum-canceling. If you like, I can try to come up with one that will work for you. You will still have to flip one pickup though. Do you have a preference as to which one?

EDIT: You'll also still need to put the magnet back in the way you found it. :D

Re: Wiring help

If you flip a magnet to the wrong orientation you'll end up with the guitar being out of phase when both pickups are selected. This will not affect if it cancels hum or not. To cancel hum when both pickups are selected one of the pickups needs to be reverse wound. I'd rather go with push/pulls or mini toggles than extra sections on a selector blade. But that's just my preference.

Re: Wiring help

i was able to fix it all, essentially wired it up like a Blacktop strat, just figured out the wire colors and used a master tone. Neck was left flipped

Patience grasshopper. Some of us are old, tired, and trying to decide between answering your post and having another beer. :beerchug:

I'll look at this as soon as I get kramersteen's diagram done. :)
