Wiring pickups straight to output jack?

Im going to do some rewiring on my guitar, but for now, I do not have any spare pots and caps to use.

I was thinking, for the mean time, could I just wire the pickups straight to the output jack? Would this sound ok, and what can I expect as a change from my previous 1 volume 1 tone + 3way wiring.

Im using a pearly gates neck btw, and a custom custom bridge. The guitar is basswood, and yeah I could use more highs so maybe this is a good thing? I will put in the proper pots later on most likely, but for now, I need something temporary and would like some advice.

Also, would putting a resistor, cap, etc in line with the pickups do anything interesting?

Not having a volume control will be a bit inconvenient IMO. If you wire it up without a tone cap, it should be a bit brighter.

I'd order some pots, and wait for them to show up, and use a different guitar while I waited.

Do this quick-'n-dirty mod to simulate a vol/tone control on "10" . . .

Wire them straight across the output jack. Use resistors and cap that you would normally use, ie., 500k resistors for 500k pots, 250k resistors for 250k pots, etc. Use your normal tone cap.

If I'm not mistaken, you're going to get pretty stronger resonance frequencies. Passives usually have the resonance frequency in the upper mids and highs 3KHz - 7-8KHz. So something like increased presence will be the case.....

Re: Wiring pickups straight to output jack?

Ok wired it straight to output jack, but it sounds muddy for some reason. Any tips to brighten it up a lot? I need more clarity. I will use EQ for tonight, but yeah I need tips haha. I just did a wiring job with a sharp knife and some tape hahaha in about 20 minutes.

Re: Wiring pickups straight to output jack?

I thought you were taking a break from forums?

If'n I were to do it, I'd just go into the volume pot directly to the jack. That gives you... volume control...

Re: Wiring pickups straight to output jack?

well I played it tonight...wow...I ran it into a really nice overdrive pedal and yeah that really made it sing. Great!

I really like it. But yeah, my stock electronics were those garbage mini alpha pots so just eliminating them helps I bet. Im going to pick up some quality electronics tomorrow and wire her up. Should be fun.

Re: Wiring pickups straight to output jack?

The mini alpha ones I have are pretty crappy (they may not even by alpha) so yeah im going to switch them. I have full sized alpha pots on another guitar and they are great. I have a really nice quality 1 meg pot laying around, so I might stick that in today just for the volume. Never know what I might throw in. Would a 1M volume pot be brighter than a 500K? just curious...

That schematic that ArtieToo has I might try, but I need to figure out what those symbols mean. Its probably on the net somewhere, thanks again guys, esp ArtieToo!
