Wiring question

Hi,

Sorry if this has been already posted and answered before but I did not find the question after a quick look-up.

So my question is how to wire the following set up:

HSS configuration with 1 master volume, 1 master tone (push-pull) and 5-way switich (this one: http://www.guitarelectronics.com/product/SWL54/5-way-4-Pole-Strat-Guitar-Lever-Switch-USA.html)

The idea for wiring is that when the tone-pot is down the configuration should be the basic HSS-strat configuration:
1. Bridge HB
2. Inner coil of Bridge HB + Middle SC
3. Middle SC
4. Middle SC + Neck SC
5. Neck SC

When the tone put is pulled up the configuration should be as follows:
1. Bridge HB splitted (either inner or outer, which ever is possible)
2. Inner coil of Bridge HB + Middle SC
3. Outer coil of Bridge HB + Neck SC
4. Middle SC + Neck SC
5. Neck SC

I've found the diagram for the tone pot pulled up option (http://www.guitarelectronics.com/product/WDUHSS5L1102/WDU-HSS5L11-02.html) and the tone-pot down option is pretty obvious, but how to combine the two in one guitar with one push-pull is the question. Is it even possible?

Thanks for any help in advance!

Re: Wiring question

A single push pull isn't going to enable all those options. Also the diagram doesn't do the position 1 split as stated in the 'up' configuration. Position 3 is doing completely different things - trying to replace the middle pickup with the neck and one coil of the bridge. That's too many wires that need to be switched with only a DPDT on-on switch.

Re: Wiring question

Thanks for the reply!

I noticed that too about the linked diagram but somehow I forgot to write it down that it misses the coil-split of the humbucker. Sorry about that!

How would it be possible to wire this configuration? Or is too complicated and should I just "sacrifice" either the middle SC or the Bridge + Neck in the 3-position and go with the regular or linked wiring with coil-split in the bridge?

Re: Wiring question

The problem I'm seeing is #PDT switches are just on-on between two different choices, and you're really wanting to change what the middle position is doing, meaning you need position 3 as common while other wires change around it. Maybe you could make it work with one of those. This needs more thought. I'm not seeing how to make it work right now.

You might want to confirm all those combinations are really useful for you before going too far. Like try putting the pickups in and use alligator clamp wires to temporarily wire the settings one by one, hear what they sound like, take notes, and figure out if you can dispense with any of them. That way you're only solving hard problems for settings you know you need.

^^^This.

I'm a fiend for wiring and re-wiring my guitars. I do it for the love of learning though as 99% of the time when playing I use one of only 3 options from the available 64+ of my guitar.

Granted, two of the three options wouldn't be available without custom wiring...

Re: Wiring question

The basic HSS strat configuration is what I use most of the time + the coil splitted humbucker. I am also one of the rare people who use the middle pup alone. That actually started when I had HSH guitar with no coil splitting and I looked for a single coil tones. For some reason that middle pup tone suits my playing very well in certain songs we play.

Now I am able to achieve reasonably authentic single-coil sounds with splitting the bridge humbucker but there is a need for some tele-type (bridge + neck) sounds to be achieved with this guitar. Why I want to achieve it with this guitar is that my goal is to play a gig with as few guitars and guitar changes as possible - I want to change the guitar only to go for a different tuning.

I am no thinking that could i achieve the configuration do it with one DPDT or 3PDT or 4PDT swith and a push-pull pot? The other controlling the coil split of the humbucker and the other the 3-postion?

In my opinion, based on the above, I would wire a normal 5-way HSS, have a push-pull to split the bridge whenever you want, and have another push-pull for a bridge on/blower switch to combine the bridge with whichever you want.

This diagram shows neck on, but I would do bridge on because you won't get the neck tone if you flip the neck-on switch while in the bridge position. Although, the previous diagram you posted shows a master tone, so maybe this isn't a concern.

I was handed an HSS strat on Friday to do a setup on and do this wiring mod to. Quickest cheapest and easiest mod for a strat.

Might even throw in a phase switch to get it quacking like a duck...
