Wiring Questions re: HSS Strat with Duncan STKs in neck and middle.

Hi everyone,

Looking to get a set of Duncan pickups for an HSS strat, the Dimarzios of which I am not bonding with. I've yet to choose the bridge humbucker, but the middle and necks should be STK-S4s or STL-S7s.

Four Questions:

Q1: To get the bridge humbucker and middle to quack better, I will need to split the bucker and the middle. Duncan's 4-wire allows this. I know that the STK-S4s have a middle RWRP version. Will I need the RWRP version to get a silent position 2 quack with the middle and the bridge humbucker?

Q2: If so, do they make an RWRP STK-S7, if I want to go that direction?

Q3: The very fact of the existence of the RWRP suggests that when not split, the quacking of the full unsplit pickup is not that great. Has anyone here tried with splitting and without?

Q4: Is it possible to do the suggested wiring scheme with a simple 5-way switch, or will a special 5-way (4P5T) switch be required?:

1. Bridge HB
2. Bridge HB Split with middle STK-S4 RWRP split
3. Middle STK-S4 RWRP
4. Middle STK-S4 RWRP split with STK-S4 neck split
5. Neck STK-S4

Thank you.

Re: Wiring Questions re: HSS Strat with Duncan STKs in neck and middle.

1.- It depends, first you really need to know your humbucker wound and polarity. If the humbucker will be also from SD then my answer would be yes but you also need to decide if you want to use the inner (slugs) or outer (screws) coils.

2.- Good question, I don't know. What I did to avoid getting into hard to find (at list for me) 5 way superswitch or RWRPs I did not knon if I could find I simply used a true single coil in the middle, the SSL-1. I don't care for hum in the middle pickup as I either use clean or hum cancelling in notch positions.

3.- I cannot tell it is a bad quack sound when not split, but I can tell you I use an STK-S6 in the neck with autosplit along with an SSL-1 in the middle, it is both hum cancelling and a good enough quack for me, better that a stock MIM Std Stratocaster 2008 I just got a couple of days ago. I recommend you split the STK for better quack and I remember Frank Falbo recommending the same in this forum.

4.- Never tried that so I don't know. Have you searched in the wiring diagrams library?

But if you decide to use Humbucker, true single coil, stacked single coil all from Seymour Duncan then your diagram would be similar to this, with the exception that SD stacked single coils have only 3 conductors (singnal, ground and split), except for the STK-S10.

I do an HSS with a 59/Custom Hybrid, STK-S4, and Five Two. The way it is wired (using a Megaswitch), all positions are hum-cancelling, and you can get some mega-quack happening.

Thanks, Mincer!

Another question: Is your STK-S4 in the middle an RWRP?

Thanks.

The STK-S4 isn't in the middle. The Five Two is. To do the wiring scheme I want, the STK-S4 in the neck is RWRP. I wrote about it here.

Is the neck STK-S4n a RWRP and still hum cancelling with the FiveTwo? Didn't you post a thread about it not being a hum cancelling and then switched to a regular non RWRP? I remember that thread a lot and my regular STK-S6 is hum cancelling whit a regular SSL-1 in the middle, unless of course the FiveTwo is made differently to an SSL-1.
