wiring trouble

Ok, so my friend is having trouble wiring a guitar. It's a problem I've never come across, here's what his problem is...

"I’m having a problem Installing a random humbucker pickup in the neck of my epiphone les paul. It couldn’t be more straightforward. There is just a lead and ground. After soldering, I tested it and it sounded perfect for about 1 minute before cutting off and still producing sound but a weak clean sound. I’ve tried resoldering a few times but the same problem keeps recurring. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated."

Anyone know what the problem could be? I can't imagine why a signal would pass, then fade away.

Re: wiring trouble

this sounds like a switch or volume control problem. Try spraying some contact cleaner on/in the switch and pots.

Re: wiring trouble

Is the solder good? Tight & shiny? Does anything happen when you wiggle the wires you soldered (like cut in & out?). Verify that the hots & grounds are on the right lugs. Did you check the new PU on a multimeter to see that it was good? Could be a shorted wire in the PU.

Did the toggle & pots work fine before? Try to narrow down the potential problem areas. If so, double check everything you did. Sometimes a drop of solder lands where it shouldn't, or another wire gets pulled loose. Also, check the toggle, sometimes the prongs need to be bent a little to make the connections when it's flipped. Basically this is detective work.
