With lengths becoming a concern , lets talk about Cables

Re: With lengths becoming a concern , lets talk about Cables

pure curiosity, to the guys that use long cables to tame high end, wouldn't it be more effective to use a cable just long enough to let you move on stage or a wireless and tame the high end with the tone pot? i mean, that thing is there to be used, don't you defeat the whole purpose of that knob by shavin high end with cable, also adding more weight and occupying more space of your cases and gigbags by bringing 40 feet of cable when you only need 10 and ride the tone pot?

as said pure curiosity, as i'm a player that most of the time uses wild slashing mounts of ear raping high end to get a really crisp tone and when i want to sound warmer i turn my tone down

As mentioned, bleeding off top end with a longer cable sounds/feels different than rolling off the tone knob.

Additionally, it's not uncommon for me to be running my tone knob down around 2 or 3 in addition to the cable bleed off. Depends on what kind of sound I'm going for.

Hello everyone,
When you build a killer pedal board and use the effect loop as well as the front of your amp, you got 3 cables running to your amp. So these cables can get kinda long. I prefer to keep them between 12-15ft each. So that's 45 feet of cable not including the 15 footer your using from your guitar to your board. Now you can look at 60 ft total length and that doesn't include the Patch cables between your pedals. That could easily add another 10 feet or more. So now your at 70 feet of cable from your guitar to your amp section of your amp.

My concern is the quality of these cables, the ability to reject noise, the ability to retain signal integrity.
1) What is everyone using in their rigs and why?
2) IF cost is no object , what cables would you use and why?

I don't have this kind of rig but if I did I would use a buffer before the pedalboard, and avoid coiled cables. I am more concerned about retention of tone.

I only use one 18 ft cable from my pedal board to my amp which is usually long enough even on the big stages. I'm on wireless so I don't have to worry about cable lengths. And I don't use any effects in the loop so that's another two cables eliminated. I do set the cable emulator thing on the wireless receiver to about 15ft to tame some top end zing though, otherwise it sounds far too trebley.

I really like my Lava Retro Coil. I've got George L, Planet Waves, and Hosa on my various boards. One brand I've really been enjoying lately is Pig Hog. Really nice cables for some really reasonable prices.
