WLH much better with 500k pots. Duh.

I started a thread a couple weeks back about having put a Whole Lotta Humbucker set into my EBMM Silhouette. My reaction was a bit muted. To be honest I was kind of let down. It grew on me, but something still wasn't quite right. However, I had kept the 250k pots so I could keep the middle single coil sounding good. Big mistake.

Switched it out for a 500k yesterday and HOLY S***! Soooo much better. One of the best PAF style pickups I've heard in a bolt-on neck alder bodied guitar. Also installed a 6.62k Texas Hot Antiquity in the middle which balances nicely with the WLH's.

Point being - anyone considering putting these in a Strat or something similar, it sounds great!

Good to know. I'm pretty clueless when it comes to the whole pots and caps thing. I don't have an H-S-H strat to put them in, just an H-S-S, but I have considered them for an Epi LP.

Yep. There are VERY few humbuckers that work well with 250k pots in my experience. I never go lower than 300k pots in anything except 3-single-coil Strats.

Newbie (to pots) question here.

Before I open one up to check, are most pots labeled with their value? Or do you have to check them with a meter?

Re: WLH much better with 500k pots. Duh.

It often says, but sometimes the markings are covered by a blob of solder, or its not marked at all. You should keep a multimeter on hand if you don't already have one.

Most of them are labeled and you should be able to see it when you open your electronics cavity without removing the pot... unless someone has soldered over the pot value. If you can't read it, you will have to disconnect it to get a correct reading.
