Worth it to pay $800 for a modded Bassman head?

I have been thinking of spicing up my gear as of lately and a guy I know near me who builds/mods amps. He is selling a 50 watt Bassman head. All the stuff is original and cleaned up but he modded it to where the normal bass channel is your standard bassman channel. The normal channel is more of a Fender meets Marshall JMP with the slide switch acting as extra gain.

I have gotten to play it and I like it, I could get some great ZZ Top and Queens of the Stone Age tones but I worry about being able to sell it again for close to that price.:nervous:

He also offers a lifetime warranity incase it messes up.

I wouldn't pay that myself but if it sounds like you want it to sound and the guy stands behind his work move on it...

I think the price is a bit steep in some respects, but if it gives you those two sounds and it sounds good it isn't really that bad of a purchase.

Too much for a silverface . . . and the fact that it is modded makes it even higher.

Unmodded classic amps fetch HI prices, not the ones that has been tampered with.
$600.00 for a spotlessly squeekie kleen UNmodded silerface Bassman, maybe.
Blackfaces, slightly more.

Yep, too much-
I just bought a 67 SF/BF (transition year, vertical lines, drip edge-AB763) for 500. and I felt that was almost too much- but it sounds so good!

Worth is subjective. If you love it and it just rocks your world, then maybe it's not too much. Okay, so if you're paying $200 bucks too much, that's one thing. But if the guys gone thru it for you and replaced all the corroding funk inside, it's probably going to sound better than that $500 one you find on Craigslist.

Those you find for 4-500 bucks often are in need of cap jobs as well as other stuff.

If it rocks your world and you don't care about resale value, then buy it.
