Would a piezo pickup work well for a violin/viola?

Re: Would a piezo pickup work well for a violin/viola?

Technically speaking, yes it would work.
Aesthetically speaking, maybe so maybe no.

Re: Would a piezo pickup work well for a violin/viola?

The new Yamaha electric violins use some sort of piezo pickups.

Generally if I'm micing a violin, either they'll have an instrument mounted mic just under the strings or I'll point a SM57 at them.

Thanks guys. There is an aesthetically pleasing, for this purpose, piezo. I'm just looking for options. The Shure would work better than a condenser mic? Hmm. I might try both at once! Ha. The instrument mounted deal I saw was well beyond my budget.

It depends how you go with it. With the rest of my setup, I just like how most stringed instruments sound with the SM57. Though the usual running recommendation is a condenser. I only have one condenser though and I've never really found much it sounds good with.

I believe our VP of Engineering recently did some modifications to a Perfect Timbre for a violin and the customer was really floored with the results. If you want him to make one for you just shoot us an email customshop@seymourduncan.com or call 805-964-9610.

Oh man, do I wish! Is it less than $69? lol. I'd go that route in a second - I'm stuck using Sweetwater at the moment. Thanks for the suggestion!

It might be out of your price range (it's definitely more than $69), but my g/f is a serious violin/viola player and swears by The Band by Headway through a clean tube amp. She tried everything from a Fishman bridge mounting pickup to a stick-on transducer to an LR Baggs bridge pickup and The Band beats all of them. It provides the best clarity and response of anything else she has ever used. And, it doesn't require permanent installation, which is a huge benefit.

Re: Would a piezo pickup work well for a violin/viola?

I'm glad I ran into your post. I've responded to a few posts like this, and am glad to see other orchestra players. I built an electric cello (see picture below) and found using a Schaller contact pickup to be excellent. Since you are looking at a violin, I'm not sure if it might be a bit big, but I would try using a contact pickup before using a (strip type) piezo. Just stick it to the back of the bridge towards the bass side.
