would using a boss ds-1...

with the distortion all the way down and the level all the way up serve the same as using an overdrive like a tubescreamer before the pre? I've never used an overdrive before the pre so I don't know the tonal differences between that and using a distortion pedal with the the level up and distortion down. I have a ds-1 that I never use so I was trying to find a use for it and I don't have an overdrive so I was just wondering.

Re: would using a boss ds-1...

if you keep the distortion low, it won't color the sound that much, but you'll still get a DS-1 flavored type cleans.

Re: would using a boss ds-1...

Honestly, I think it sounds horrible (unless you're just playing leads). If you thought Tubescreamers and SD-1's weren't transparent, you'll be shocked at how much it colors your tone; even when used as a boost (but there might be some situations where that kind of "processed" sound could be desirable).

See....Lew has a different story he talks about with his MIJ DS1? Must be something Going on in that MIJ DS1? I don't ever get any of those to mod,so that says something right there....I trust Lew's ears and knowledge very much though!

I should clarify...John's modded DS-1's sound great on top of a clean channel ( :laugh2: ); but with every DS-1 I've tried (modded or not) to use as a boost with the amp already in medium to high overdrive, I've gotten crap results (squishy, artificial-sounding, heavily-compressed tone).

Re: would using a boss ds-1...

sure if the distortion is low and i mean really low it will still add some color to your sound, but you need it for soloing ??? so its ok i guess, i have one too and i use when i use my tube head amp for soloing..
cheers

Re: would using a boss ds-1...

I don't really need it for anything. I was just going to try it as I have a tube amp and can't really turn it up so a boost might sound a little better for practice purposes. I don't really need it for soloing as I have a solo channel on my rectoverb. It was just a thought and just wanted to hear some opinions on it compared to an overdrive, thanks for the replies.

Oh yes.....The DS1 has to be used with a good clean tone on your amp...It's very harsh through a channel that is already overdriving or is even slightly overdriven....It's a distortion pedal and that's what I use my own DS1 for...
