wound 3rd G string?

Re: wound 3rd G string?

I use a wound 18 on some of my guitars for the attack that winding gives it. I find it useful for progressive metal type crap where Im doing alot of palm muted fast passages on the higher strings.

Re: wound 3rd G string?

The wound 3rd to me sounds fuller/thicker. 11-52 deans come with both a plain and wound 3rd string. Try it, if you don't like it switch out to the plain.

Re: wound 3rd G string?

I used one for a while...doesn't mess up the nut.

I went back to a plain string after a few months because the plain string had more cut. However, that was strictly a personal preference.

I say give it a try!

Re: wound 3rd G string?

i already bought this before, i forgot that i had it.

i'll try them in my strat soon.

Re: wound 3rd G string?

one of the advantages would be to have a fully tunned string

to my ears an unwounded 3rd string sounds always out of tunne

i see, maybe its because of the stronger tension thus more intonation. but still making the strings not too thick.

Re: wound 3rd G string?

i wanna try a wound G too. i think it would be perfect for my heavy handed rhythm style and shredding on plain strings is weird for me

Re: wound 3rd G string?

They're easier to bend, too. Somebody's gonna argue with me on that, so I'll just say what I think, and what physics backs up: It's easier to bend a string with lower tension. A wound 18 has lower tension than a plain 18.

I'll argue with you on this one. The main reason that I stopped using the wound third is that I found it almost impossible to bend. I used D'Addario .11s with a wound third for ages . . . finally switched to the ones with a plain third and I could hit all of those wide bends on the solo to Another Brick in teh Wall.

According to D'Addario's website the tension on a 3rd of .11s(EXL 115) is 18.6lbs and the tension for a wound third is 21.5 lbs(EXL 115W). Maybe this accounts for the difference?

Re: wound 3rd G string?

I like it !
I think it give me a "better" 1940's Blues tone with the wound G.
But that is just me !
Also, neither me nor my brother has a problem with fitting it on our guitars.

I agree. The thicker a string is, the tighter it has to be to reach the correct pitch, which is verified by string manufacturers tension ratings. And tighter strings mean harder bending. I also agree that a plain G string often seems to be slightly out of tune, but I can live with that in exchange for the deep Peter Green style bends I can get with them.

Yes, that would account for it. Also accounting for it is the fact that the plain third is an 18, and the wound is a 21 ;)

Read the chart, and you'll see that the tension on a plain 18 tuned to G is 18.6, and that of a wound 18 tuned to G is 16.1, so I stand by my original statement.

Re: wound 3rd G string?

I have been using wound 3rd strings for about as long as I've been playing guitar (11 years). I always preferred the chunkier feel and sound of a wound 3rd string, especially since I have been tuning down to B-standard for the past few years. However, just within the past 4 or 5 months, I started using a plain 24-gauge 3rd string. At first, it felt really weird, it sounds totally different, and I feel like I have had to slightly adjust my playing to accommodate it. But for the past few months I have been getting used to it, and for now I prefer a fatty fat plain 3rd string.
