Wow Def Leppard Does T Rex

I just got home, turned on the tube, and Def Leppard was on Leno doing 20th Century Boy by T Rex. They used Marshalls and Ashdown from what I could tell. LPs and Jackson (collen).

They sounded GREAT. nailed the tones and vocals, AND they did some cool dueling guitar solos at the end, and it all sounded within the flow of the tune.

Very impressive!

Very cool. All in preparation for their new album which is all covers.

That I would have liked to see, maybe it'll pop up on You Tube, damn.

Ahh very cool. I am sure that they knew what they were doing.. cool song too.

After checking out the previews online, I decided to buy the cd yesterday. It's quite a pleasure to pop in a cd of new music, and at the same time you know the words to all the songs and can sing along right away!

Some of the booklet graphics are cool too. The Leps ape some of their favorite cover poses, with Sav doing Queen, Viv as T-Rex Electric Warrior, and Phil doing Bowie (or is it really Iggy Pop?).

Some of the song choices are curious, but surprisingly they all seem to work. The Blondie cover "Hanging On the Telephone" was an unusual choice in the company of the rest, but it's really cool. It should be the next single. The current single "Rock On" (David Essex) starts out with Pro Tools overproduction, but ends in a fury of guitars that hits like a thunderbolt. They should have kept more of the final jam on the track.

Their rendition of Thin Lizzy's "Don't Believe a Word" is note for note perfect, right down to the wah wah swells. "Little Bit of Love," by Free, is a whole new take on this one, full of bright and snappy guitars. "Stay With Me" is another highlight with it's greasy slide guitars.

The good news is, with this offering the Leps are ROCKING again! Let's hope they keep it up for their next album of original material.

I saw that yesterday. They sounded great. Phil was playing a Jackson equipped with a speedloader Floyd. The headstock looks weird without tuners. :eyecrazy:

Re: Wow Def Leppard Does T Rex

I'm not surprised they did it justice. They've only been a band 5 times longer than T. Rex. hehe

Re: Wow Def Leppard Does T Rex

I saw it too. I thought it was pretty cool, but where were the backup singer chicks hiding? :laugh2:

Wel, Vivs two biggest influences were Brian and Gary..so I would hope he would do them justice.

That said, as I understand it, (I haven't heard any Def Leppard since the last album w/ Clark) Viv doesn't do much in the way of lead work anymore and Phil handles most of it? Sad...Viv had such talent, and just got sick of the whole guitar god thing I guess. Back when Dio hit, he was THE new young gun..then Yngwie hit, and shred took over the scene.

Re: Wow Def Leppard Does T Rex

I dig the Faces cover "Stay With Me". Phil Collen's debut at singing and he sounds like Rod Stewart to a "T". I wish he would sing more often and makes Joe Elliot seem like a little girl.

That song "Rock On" I'm not familiar with the original but didn't Def Lappard do a song where they repeatedly said "Rock On"? The melody and arrangement on this CD sounds familiar like they stole this song for one of their own when that old Def Leppard song was written I think it was when Clark was still in the band.

I think if they give Vivian Campbell a bigger role and let Collen sing more, they might reach the expectations I had for them after they came out with High N' Dry.

damn, i missed the show but i am listeneing to some of the album now....cool stuff!

i actually kinda like the new speedloader PC1 he has...

i was just reading about that new PC1 he has with the speedloader...
he sent it back to have the headstock match the body since he thought it looked odd natural maple and add the huge logo that Jackson now calls the "made for TV logo" LOL.

Re: Wow Def Leppard Does T Rex

Yep. That's the exact guitar he was playing. The giant Jackson logo is hard to see (even in high def) with the quilt. Funny, I didn't even realize that it was a speedloader until he spun away from the camera and I noticed that there were no tuners on the back of the neck. He's right to get it painted. It looks totally unfinished with raw maple. Maybe they should put a giant Jackson logo on the back too. :laugh2:
