i just got my 4-track recorder (cassette) and wow it seems weird! its like, all the songs i worked out before hand dont really work now! like, when played live they sound pretty cool, now they sound wierd, dont know why. any help?

i know they will sound different, and i have to work that out, but anyone else have the same experiences?

on a good note, a song i have been working on for a while now seems to fit into play when i can record it....

Re: wow recording is different!!!

A lot of it might not be so much that it sounds different as that you are trying to imagine the response or reception to the tunes. Also your experience hearing it when you are NOT playing it live is going to be different...like hearing your voice on a tape.

It's really hard to learn mic placement, too, IMHO. But it's fun and it beats playing golf.

nothing beats golf, lol, played twice this weekend and won 78 bucks. lol

so buy a mic cord :D

My respect for good recordings has really increased since I started doing home recording. It's always a challenge.

For starters, experiment with mic placement and panning of instruments.

Do you have any specific questions?

Re: wow recording is different!!!

yeah, this weekend im getting a chord.

actually, yeah i do have a question though....about how far should a mic be set up? should i just fool around with it because its different for different amps/areas/etc.?

sure is. i place it different for rythm/lead. if your playing a crunchy rythm, you need to back it off or move it toward the middle because if it's off to the side you'll get to much bass and punch in your recording. when playing lead i move it toward the side to get more bass because it sounds fuller that way. just play with it for awhile you'll get it. (btw, recording can be a huge pain in the ass, imo)

edit: forgot to give my 2 cents.

xerxes, keep at it! I was shocked when I first started recording myself. Found out everything I thought was Über-cool sounded way too buzzy and generic. I had to back off a lot on the gain to let the true guitar sound come through.

I occasionally mic stuff, mostly record direct using the XLR output of my TM 10. I've got few mic'ed clips. For micing, I just play around until I find a good-sounding spot then have at it. I've recorded with the mic right on the grille cloth and other times up to 3-4 feet away. Just depends on what you want it to sound like. The only wrong way is when it doesn't sound good. If you like what you hear, that's the right way :D

Re: wow recording is different!!!

cool guys, thanks!

also, my j-station, is there any output so i can send that to my 4-track?

Re: wow recording is different!!!

i started out on a protools setup and now i got a protools setup and like 20 mics.

Re: wow recording is different!!!

recording is a weird thing, i learned that its best not too start recording at night time because you'll never stop it! i once was recording guitar stuff and i started about 11:30 and i didn't know how fast time went by! i ended up realizing it was about 4:30 when i stopped!
it's fun though, and your playing gets tighter as you do more. it's great!!

Re: wow recording is different!!!

I always mic my guitars so I can try to catch the live sound. I don't have much luck with direct input devices. I have more fun cranking the amp and mic'ing different speakers.
