WTB Gibson Protector Case

You know, the funky black plastic case...I think they called 'em 'chainsaw' cases...has a red thick padded interior. Wanna keep my Les Paul safe and cozy. Thanks

tsk tsk, be a man and toss that wood brick into the van with no case and let it slide around and smash into stuff.

easy peasy relic and pretty sick looking too! you might have a few cracked amps or side doors :lmao::

Re: WTB Gibson Protector Case

I have a Protector case from 1986 and by then they were blue interiors. You must be thinking of older pre-1985 Protector case which are red. My 1986 case is not for sale though.

Re: WTB Gibson Protector Case

I have one, not willing to sell. The latches on them easily break off.

Re: WTB Gibson Protector Case

The latches on the blue one are flimsy metal and one of mine is buggered but still works. The red ones do have different latches like big plastic locking tabs that click. They seem like they would be more durable actually and not quite sure they went to the metal ones which seem more expensive to make and not any more durable.

If they had the blue interior with the plastic latches that would be the ideal case IMO, and I don't think they ever made the blue ones with those latches unfortunately.

Re: WTB Gibson Protector Case

These aren't photos of mine but I own a few of each kind so here's the difference.

You're looking for a Gen 1 Protector case (generation 1), correct? Looks like this and came with red interior only.

The Gen 2 Protector case looked like this. It came with blue, orangy gold, and black interior. Near the end of the run in 87-88, some of them didn't even have the cover to the accessory pocket or black fur in the headstock area,....just the raw plastic.

As you can see, the Gen 1 was much smaller than Gen 2 and is more desired. It reportedly protects a little better and has a tighter fit, even though it doesn't seem to have as much padding as a Gen 2. That LP Junior in my avatar fits tightly in a Gen 2, but I prefer the Gen 1 just because they're not near as bulky. I really don't know if they protect better since I don't drag my guitars down the street behind my pickup truck. On Gen 1 cases, the plastic latches would sometimes break under heavy use and the plastic covered foam handle would sometimes decompose under heavy use. The Gen 2 had metal latches that would break; however you can find draw latches at some luggage supply companies that are similar and can be used as replacements. Sometimes you can still find decent deals on these but more and more, people are wanting crazy money for them. But I know guys who keep their high dollar vintage Les Pauls in Gen 1 cases and swear by them.

End of plastic chainsaw case lesson.:)

Re: WTB Gibson Protector Case

Thanks. Yeah, I've seen both, been playing since the 70s, I always thought they were ugly and weird, not as kool as a regular case. But I do appreciate these now, just may be hard to find eh? I know of a real nice blue lined one, but I kinda want the red one, the metal latches and hinges look more sturdy that the plastic ones. If anyone has the red one they wanna trade, I'd pick it up and swap....

Re: WTB Gibson Protector Case

Well, I grabbed the blue one, looks brand new, actually swapped it even for my Gibby stock case. Went to grab some George Ls at a mom-n-pop shop, asked the guy if he had any Gibby protector cases, he said there's one. It was real dirty, has some numbers painted on, he gave it to me for 15 bucks. I cleaned it up. looks like new. The foam under the headstock left a slight gap, so I cut some foam and glued it under the blue fur. Goldie and Blackie have plastic coffins now....I'd still like a red one, so if anyone wants to trade, lemme know.

Re: WTB Gibson Protector Case

Thanks. Now my 2 LPs are safe and sound goin to practice and gigs. Looks like I'm playing acoustics, those cases are thick.

Re: WTB Gibson Protector Case

I have the red one which came with my 1982 that has the plastic latches. Im not sure why but some of the plastic around the handle is deteriorating though. Im not sure what condition your looking for but i had thought about buying a new one and might sell it

Re: WTB Gibson Protector Case

I've had two of the old 1st Gen Protector cases... I don't know why I ever let them go.
