Torch tip cleaners do an awesome job and they cost less than $20.

If you are opening up an already cut nut they work fine. I wouldn't try to cut a nut from scratch.
I have also never tried a bone nut with them but it cuts simulated bine and graphite just fine.
I had to set a guitar up for drop b and was too cheap to buy a set from Stew Mac and this was how I discovered it, I had them in my toolbox and was like, hell.. These are round files, I've used them several times since.
