WTB: TI83+ or 84+ graphing calculator

Here's the deal.... I decided it was time to upgrade from my old TI85, and after some checking, I got a TI89 Titanium. Very nice calc, but I'm not allowed to use it for my math classes, as it apparently "does too much"

So, I need either an 83+ or 84+. I'd like to hang onto the 89, but might be willing to do some sort of trade if anyone is interested. The 89 is about a month old, with an hour or two of use.

Re: WTB: TI83+ or 84+ graphing calculator

I'm pretty sure I have one at home that I'd be willing to give you. ... Gimmie about 2 hours and I'll be back in here.

Re: WTB: TI83+ or 84+ graphing calculator

The 89 is amazing, yeah, but you're not allowed to use it on SATs, ACTs, AP tests, etc, etc... really a pain in the ass if you bought it without realizing the restrictions.

But in all honesty, if I had one, I'd forget how to factor polynomials faster than a goldfish!

heh - we're only allowed the casio fx-115, nothing more -

i have a TI-81 knocking about for graphing, but it stores text - thats usually the killer.

Seriously?? I know that for a few tests over here that the instructor will clear your calculators memory, so you can't store notes or formulas or programs that do extra functions for you, but I couldn't imagine doing half of my work without a graphing calculator.

Re: WTB: TI83+ or 84+ graphing calculator

it's mad - graphical methods are considered way too imprecise for my stuff, lots of exponents mean you end up way off target with a tiny little error..

we mostly use the goal-seek, calcalus, cubic+quadratic solvers, and the fact you can iterate stuff.. they're an incredible little tool for maths!

It's pretty stupid, because the math dept says it's too powerful, yet the engineering dept sees no problem with it, even though I have a suspicion that I do more math in the engineering classes than in math :)

It's been several years since I was in any class room, but that was the case in high school. We did more math in advanced chem than we did in most of my other math courses. I'd presume engineering would be no differ.

That's because engineers are not only efficient by trade, but actually APPLY mathematics, rather than just teach elaborate concepts and ridiculously long, variable-ridden jibberish that you'll only use to get into more math courses later on. :laugh2:

Alight, check yer PMs, JB. ;)
Gracias amigo :D

Part of me appreciates the idea of stretching your brain with said jibberish, and training it to think in new ways. The other part of me thinks that it's total crap, and I get enough of it in classes that actually pertain to my degree.

Still though, it's the stuff like "You can't use the TI89 on tests, but we'll wait to tell you that until after you've bought it and discarded the packaging" crap that pisses me off the most.
