Xotic EP-Booster. Is anyone here using one?

I'm thinking of asking my wife to put one in my Christmas stocking. It won the Guitar Player's Editor's Pick award and seems to be getting universally positive reviews. It's the preamp from an Echoplex. I don't know if this is true, but the rap is that guys like EVH, Jimmy Page and Eric Johnson use the Echoplex and as a booster and even disable the tape echo function. http://www.xotic.us/effects/ep_booster/

Here's Brent Mason using one. He says he leaves it on most of the time.

I don't know of a way to disable the echo part of an EP-3 and there are no controls on the preamp really so I don't know that there is a way to use it as a boost but I can tell you that the preamp on an EP-3 does have a sound and IMHO it's a good sound!

I love my EP-3...not only is it the best echo unit ever IMHO that sonic change the pre offers is just too cool.

That said, never tried any of the EP3 Pre's in a box on the market...

I have a DIY Ep-style booster that I built using a board from MadBean Electronics. It's a cool pedal, but I go along with those who say it's an "always on" kinda thing. It gives your guitar a bit "more", plus some EQ (mine has a 3-wsay EQ switch). I found however, that it doesn't have enough gain to use as a solo boost - it's more subtle than that.

Thanks for the replies guys! I use my EH Memory Man Deluxe delay to boost the signal some and it really adds a lot but I don't always want delay.

I'm not sure how the echo would be disabled on an Echoplex - maybe by removing the tape?
