Xotic's new SL Drive is a fantastic Plexi-in-a-box

Since I can't seem to find any guys my age to jam with, I've sold off my higher-powered amps in favor of getting something more manageable for playing at home.

While I've used attenuators, PPIMV's, Power Scaling, etc., I just wanted something in the 5 watt realm for not alot of money. Marshall tones are the sound in my head and I had been leaning towards a used Slash combo which I've seen for under $600, but that was still more than I wanted to spend for playing 1/2 hr. a day. I've had a couple of Class 5's, but to me they don't sound great until at shouting level.

I'd read glowing user reviews of the SL Drive (SL for Super Lead) and for $124 new it seemed like a great value.

Grabbed a 5 watt Blackheart Little Giant combo from a GC in Iowa for $149. I've owned the head version in the past and these are great little amps. The 12" speaker seals the deal.

These pedals are so amp-like it just blows me away. It is that classic sound that's in my head. I don't know how they did it in such a small package.

I forgot to mention that inside the pedal is a set of 4 tiny switches that you can set up or down for a different EQ. Super Lead (default), Super Bass, some sample settings on the instruction sheet for J. Page, Blackmore, Kossoff, and mid-boost.

I've currently got it set on the mr. big 1969 setting - gives a great Kossoff tone! I'm currently working on Free and Bluesbreakers stuff and it's working great.

So for under $300 I have a fantastic Marshall home rig that sounds better than alot of amps I've owned at lower volumes and cranked.

BTW, alot of guys that gig with these have kicked other pedals off their boards.

How do you like the Blackheart? Found a used one at my local music store, but haven't had the opportunity to try it yet.

I think they're great amps. Having TMB controls and the combo having a 12" speaker make them compelling. They were designed by highly regarded amp builder Pyotr Belov.

I put a lower gain 5751 in the preamp slot (instead of a 12AX7) for less breakup since I'm using a pedal for dirt.
