I'm looking for a good high-end guitar to accompany my SG Standard and I've narrowed it down between these three. They all come with real Duncans and good appointments.

So which of the three would be good for me?

I haven't played the Yamaha or the Washburn, but I have owned a Hardtail for around two months now and can tell you it's a great guitar for the money (I got mine for $1000 on Ebay). I've got an SG Special and the Hardtail is a nice compliment/contrast to that guitar soundwise.

Okay guys, honestly, I have next to no interest in Hamer. I can't find any Hamer dealers nearby, I've never played one, and their looks turn me off almost immediately. I think the headstock does it for me.

So before anyone else advises to go Hamer, please make note of this. Thank you.

I've played all those models you're talking about, except the Yamaha was a different AES model. Although the Yamaha is a high quality guitar, it suffers from 'no mojo', the resale is poor, and it looks less expensive than the other two.

It's really a tossup between the Dean and Washburn. You should really get to some dealers and play them and decide for yourself. Personally, I'd probably go for a Washburn DI68 in transblack flame.

Yeah, the transblack Washburn is what I'm looking at. Like this one I found on eBay.

But I'm still interested in the Hardtail.

I appreciate the input on the Yamaha, GJ. I suppose resale value's something I should consider more.

Re: Yamaha AES920 vs. Dean Hardtail vs. Washburn WI68?

You probably won't find many dealers that have the two side by side, but you'll know when you play them for awhile. I always hate saying "one guitar's better than another" especially because ideally you'd be happiest owning both of them, or all 3.

Washburn has really improved in quality over the past few years. They can't be that bad.....Derek Trucks endorses and uses them.

I own two Hardtails, and they're a great guitars. I also own a USA Dean, Cadillac, and I like it better than I like my Hardtails. Since getting the Caddy, my Hardtails haven't been out of thier cases. Hardtail's also have poor resale value.

Just get bits from warmoth to build yourself a guitar which is as good, if not better, than all three put together!

Re: Yamaha AES920 vs. Dean Hardtail vs. Washburn WI68?

The good thing about all three of these guitars is that the resale is marginal. For that reason, buying used is a real bargain. You gotta love that transblack Washburn.
However, the Dean Hardtail in faded denim is a stunner.

I like the washburn. A guitar that it reminds me of and you may want to give a look is a Schecter Tempest, great bang for buck.

Re: Yamaha AES920 vs. Dean Hardtail vs. Washburn WI68?

I think the Hardtail is heads and shoulders above the other 2. The playability is superb, craftsmanship and materials are top of the line, and the style and shape are closer to traditional in my opinion. I am dissapointed in the re-sale value of the Hardtails initially, but time may change things. I do know that there are very few Yamaha's and Washburns from 10-15 years ago holding a decent resale value. There are "classic" Deans that still command a decent market value.

Re-sale asside, the Hardtail is an outstanding instrument that plays like it cost's twice as much.

Re: Yamaha AES920 vs. Dean Hardtail vs. Washburn WI68?

Yeah, I'm not too worried about re-sale value since I plan on playing my guitars until one of us dies.

Hmmm Hardtail in Tigerseye or Faded Denim, or a Washburn in transblack flame?
They're all great quality, it just comes down to which neck feels the best in your hand.
