I've read contradicting reports on this....does anyone know for sure if the newer Yamaha SG3000 has a brass sustain block under the bridge? According to the Yamaha Japan website...the SG1000/SG2000/SG3000 all use the same bridge piece, but no indication or mention of the sustain block.

Re: Yamaha SG3000 SBG3000

Interesting. How can you tell? Can you look in the bridge pickup cavity, or how would one verify?

Re: Yamaha SG3000 SBG3000

Ah i see...thanks for the info. Somehow I thought they were embedded under the laminate so you couldn't see it.

Re: Yamaha SG3000 SBG3000

Any opinions on what you think the block does to tone? An SG2000 should sustain more than the SG3000 without a block no?

It all depends...these guitars are heavy and made from lots of diffdrent pieces of wood designed in such a way to have a LOT of sustain. Does the block help?? Who knows! I dig them in general but I've not played enough different ones to decide what all I think the block does, Yamaha said it improved sustain so I just have to take their word for it...

Re: Yamaha SG3000 SBG3000

woooaaaaahhh. ive never seen one of theses, theyre gorgeous! how much do they go for? and do they play good?

Re: Yamaha SG3000 SBG3000

My SG3000 doesn't have one.... does it sustain? YES! Mymate has a 1000 and a 2000.. both old guitars and there is no notable difference in sustain. SG's are excellent guitars in their own right... better built than most other production guitars and well worth getting.... albeit they are heavy. It doesn't bother me.. it's heavier than my LP's but it's worth it!

Wow, I guess SG3k's don't have a block...wild, I didn't know that!

MIne is heavier than my R8 but it's a cool piece...I love the tone and feel of these guitars. I even think from time to time about going back to the original pickups, they are actually quite good!

Thanks! Yamaha made them in the late 70's until the middle/late 80's and despite being quite popular at the time I rarely see them for sale these days. Mine is an SG2000, there was an SG500, SG1000, SG1500, SG2000 and SG3000 and maybe even one or 2 others. IM not really up on all the specs of each one and as odd as it is info on the internet seems to be pretty sparce as well.

My SG2000 is neck throught bodym the neck is maple and mahogany (3 piece) with an ebony fingerboard and the body is mostle mahogany with some maple in a few places with a 3 piece maple top.

I'll tell ta, I bought mine in 1995 or 1996 and paid $275 for it in the original case. Several years later I was at a guitar show and saw one for $1200 and was amazed...I couldn't believe that the price had seemingly gone up that much in just a few years then 2 years after that guitar show I took mine to a guitar show and was offered $1500 for it! I've seen them got for over 2k in good shape on Ebay in the past year or so but I've also seen them sell for just over a grand as well. Yamaha has done several reissues over the years but I never kept up with them to be honest. Here is the most recent one, an SG1000. No neck through but it still looks pretty nice.

There are 2 SG3000's in our house and neither has one! If you have the original pick ups I believe they were called "spinex" pick ups. And, to my knowledge "spinex" was the material used for the magnets and is very rare and VERY expensive! Here's the said guitars and you may be able to see that the bridge has no piece of brass underneath like yours.

Wow, cool enough. I wonder why they left it off on the 3k's?

Whats the deal with those spinex pickups??? I do have the original pickups and the handbook lists them as alnico 5 pickups...

Re: Yamaha SG3000 SBG3000

KILLER! Thats the best Yamaha SG page I've ever seen and it answered a long time question about mine...I was told it was an early 80's when I bougth it then year later I was told late 70's...looks like coil taps happened in 1980 so that makes mine a late 70's!

thanks for the info! I REALLY like the idea of a thick SG. all the Gibsons are too thin, i feel like I'm going to break it in half every time i play one. Actually, ive been looking for a nice solid body style for my next build. I've got some african mahogany in good shape, and thanks to this topic, ive found my next guitar :) haha im stoked to get this project going.

theyre flat top, correct?
