Yellow Jacket with Marshall 6101

Hi all,

refering to the interesting thread of eresseraca I have some questions conc. the Yellow Jacket:

- I own a Marshall 6101 Anniversary. Would the pentode/triode-switch still work or possibly harm anything when using Yellow Jackets?
- What happens if only 2 of 4 tubes are exchanged - is the result a best of both worlds?
- If exchenge of only 2 tubes not possible: Is this true when switching down power to 50 W (switch off 2 tubes) as well?

Looking forward find enlightenment.

Cheers, Chris

Im not sure abou ANY of those questions!

I will say this...drop a line to THD support and they will help you. They are great guys and answer questions ASAP.

Good luck and if you don't mind let us know what they say!

Re: Yellow Jacket with Marshall 6101

I tried them with a Marshall 1959SLP & they sounded the best in this amp. Just HUGE saturated fat ass creamy goodness!!!

SO.....100w amp....pulled 2 tubes(50w) & replaced them with the EL84 loaded YJs(25w +/- class A).

I'm not sure about the pentode/triode question, but Ed DeGenaro of THD is always on line & answers emails quickly. He could help ya' out :bigok:

Re: Yellow Jacket with Marshall 6101

You´ll definitely want to ask THD about this, but here´s what I think (educated guesses all of them)...

Hi all,

Because of hte Way Yellow Jackets and TAD Tonebones work, I would say the switch wouldn´t cause damage but very likely wouldn´t have any effect either.

- What happens if only 2 of 4 tubes are exchanged - is the result a best of both worlds?

Bad Idea IMO, as this will cause the power amp to run "lopsided", much innthe same way that putting in 2 hot 6l6 would.... it would likely increase noise and "bad" distortion.

- If exchenge of only 2 tubes not possible: Is this true when switching down power to 50 W (switch off 2 tubes) as well?

Looking forward find enlightenment.

I would simply pull all 4 tubes and put the 2 yellowjackets in the outside slots. Problem solved.

But again, it´s a much better Idea to ask THD than to listen to me and blow your amp up ;)

Re: Yellow Jacket with Marshall 6101

I called THD about this once and they said you can use the Pentode/Triode switch but I don't think it would make a difference.

Either way, the 6101 can switch down to 25w, AND it has an AMAZING tone, why would you even want to put YJ's in it? It's arguable one of the best Marshall's I have ever played for TONE AND versatility. Poor man's Bogner. Esp Channel 2 in Plexi setting.

Run that thing thru a 4x12 V30 or Greenback cab and enjoy the bliss!

Re: Yellow Jacket with Marshall 6101

Hi all,
thanks for your feedback.
@Olin: Well, with the 6101 a dream of my childhood bacame true. However i didn't gig since years. I only use it in my flat which makes using a 4x12" impossible (volume and size-wise). I just remember my Crate Vintage Club which sounded great also at low volume. More warmth and fuller cleans. I currently drive it with an external Preamp (mostly a Tubeman) into the Line In which sounds ok. That's weird. I bypass the all-in-one preamp of the Marshall!!!
