Yet another amp question...

Looked at a B-52 at-212 yesterday at guitar center and must say I was impressed. Three channels, rectified, independent tone controls, under $700, and tube driven. Does anyone have any input as to how well these sound? What other amps would have similar features in the same general price range say 700-1000? I think I may wind up getting this one this weekend.

Well... i can't comment on the amp you tried, but i must say that Laney's are good amps for about 700-1000 ;)

Re: Yet another amp question...

If you like scooped, modern high gain tones, you'll probably dig it. If you're like me, you won't.

Not trying to sound like a "richard" but you can save youself a lot of money and time if you don't let yourself be "impressed" (your word) by specs and features. It's a lot more constructive to be impressed by what your ears tell you than by words on some marketing glossy or the number of knobs/switches on an amp.

If you get your tone playing a plywood crapocaster through a Smokey, more power to ya.
  • Tubes don't guarantee tone. SS amps don't all sound like doodoo.
  • Switchable rectifiers don't guarantee tone.
  • Tons of switching options (channels, boosts, etc.) don't guarantee tone. They just offer more variations of tone.
  • High wattage / low wattage doesn't guarantee tone. Not everyone likes power stage distortion. In fact, most people can't even differentiate power stage overdrive when they hear it.
  • SD pickups don't even guarantee tone.
There are no right or wrong gear choices, just that which does or does not inspire you. If you listen too much to your eyes, your ears will probably be disappointed and you won't be inspired.

Re: Yet another amp question...

I understand your point. I have never had an amp that has just wowed me, but I do know the features I am looking for in an amp. I guess I should just go to my local store and jam on every amp that has the contols I want. Listen to myself and make a decision that way....but I do like to hear others input. And I HATE playing in the middle of a store. Tone is subjective to the person seeking it.

Re: Yet another amp question...

Yup.

Well, i guess that listening to soundclips on the internet would give you a somewhat general idea of an amplifiers tone.

I'd recommend you into trying all the amplifiers you see though... that's the only way to hear the tone! :)
