Yet another mod to my Paisley Strat...

This guitar is now on it's third pickguard, and has been through a bunch of pickups and pickup orientations...but I've finally come up with something that is one of the best sounding Strats I've ever modded.

It came with a black HSS guard and pickups, and really didn't sound bad at all. The MIM Strats are good guitars even stock.

But I thought the black on black looked terrible. So I went to this, along with pickup swaps:

Many pickup swaps that were okay...but not quite right. I finally got sick of this beautiful guitar being not quite right, and took another stab. SDS-1 bridge, True Velvet middle, Red Velvet neck.

To sum it up: SUCCESS, FINALLY. It kicks MAJOR ass! The True Velvet middle is a chimey classic Strat pickup. The Red Velvet is a killer twangy and meaty yet articulate neck pickup. The SDS-1 sounds almost exactly like yummy Les Paul Junior goodness (though a bit hotter). It's so much better than any of the humbuckers that were there...and way better looking too. The Duncan equivalents would be Twang Banger, SSL-1, and an overwound StraBro90.

It's parts of Strat, Tele, and LP Jr., plus more, in one axe, without a bunch of complicated switching...though I did use some push/pulls. The middle knob pulls up as a neck-on switch. And with the bottom tone knob up, I can do the cocked wah sound to the bridge position with a switch (nice as an alternative to a bridge tone control).

A Callaham vibrato comes next. Tusq XL nut and vintage-style locking tuners after that. I'm gonna round over the fret bevels a bit and oil the fretboard. That should be about it. I don't think I'll ever let it go.

That Strat looks great with the black pick guard. I almost pulled the trigger on one but was disappointed that the paisley design isn't also on the back of the body, at least not on the MIM FSR that was out in 2012. I'd still take it over the classic red or blue paisley any day. On ebay there are lots of paisley pick guards for pretty cheap.

Re: Yet another mod to my Paisley Strat...

Nice strat, I really thought about picking up one of them. I would have been tempted to go with a black pearl pickguard, though that may be a little too busy.

Re: Yet another mod to my Paisley Strat...

I definitely went with the best looking guard...for me, anyhow. I considered all sorts of things, though. In the end, I wanted a pretty classic look.

Re: Yet another mod to my Paisley Strat...

Black MOTO, bro.

Re: Yet another mod to my Paisley Strat...

I'm not a fan of that white pickguard. I personally would have either left it black or put a black paisley pickguard on there.

Re: Yet another mod to my Paisley Strat...

So, I'm boring; what can I say. It's staying parchment, though. Pearl/designs/whatever would be too much noise against the already-loud-ass paint job, and black sucked it down too much. White was classic looking, but too brash...hence the selection of parchment. Brushed metal was my second choice, and white pearl might have been okey too.

I am going to make me a paisley strat one of these days. I was also considering doing a few do try and sell thats if i can eer get this customer job done haha

The Black paisley is fierce.

Re: Yet another mod to my Paisley Strat...

I would put a Babicz on there maybe even one of the hardtail ones just get rid of the trem.

Re: Yet another mod to my Paisley Strat...

I'd like to try one of those vibratos on something, but I'm just going with a classic-style Callaham on this guitar. Hardtail ain't gonna happen. No way. no how. I use the vibrato too much, and it's really what makes a Strat a guitar that I like.

Re: Yet another mod to my Paisley Strat...

Thought about clear and translucent gray too...and just about every other option....nope. Parchment it is; end of story. The paisley is already hokey/gimmicky. It needed to be "normalized" a bit from stock, not sent further into the outer space realm of bad taste. The guitar feels aesthetically "balanced" to me now.

I won't knock you for it. My idea of aesthetically pleasing is bright colors and black chrome hardware. It's how I roll. I personally think the parchment guard brightens up the guitar a bit, nothing wrong with it AT ALL...

I dig it bro... I wanted one, but never pulled the trigger. congrats and good job!

Re: Yet another mod to my Paisley Strat...

You might also consider a Super-Vee Blade Runner bridge!

I have several Stratocasters with Callaham bridges, but since I tried a Super-Vee’s Blade Runner, I stopped using other bridges. AND I have not broken off the tremolo arm, but do know some idiots who can break anything and did!!!

For what it is worth I also tried Babicz and noticed that the saddle did not sit completely on the bridge plate, It’s in the junk box!

I agree with your color choice of pickguard.

Last, nice guitar!

I have a pile of non traditional pick guards that I've went through. I'd like them on the guitar for a few hours or a few weeks, but ultimately go back to the standard colors. I think what happens, IMO, is that funky pick guards draw too much attention to themselves. You gain a cool pick guard, but you lose the rest of the guitar.

Re: Yet another mod to my Paisley Strat...

For some reason - the parchment guard with the covered bucker is very appealing aesthetically.... However the most important thing is how it sounds.
