Yet another pickup recommendation thread...

Hello!

The guitar in question is a Jackson hard tail used mainly for thrash/progressive 90's metal.

A while back I swapped the stock bridge pup for an Alt8, but I never really liked it (quite the opposite, actually).
Compressed, brittle and terrible clean sound...
Replaced it with a Dimarzio AT-1, which sound great for leads and chords, but not for the palm muted stuff.

So my question is - what pickup should I get?
Tight for thrash stuff but still warm and "musical" for leads.

(I love the JB in my other guitars, but I'm unsure about how it will perform in since the Alt8 sounded terrible in this guitar)...

Good old Duncan Distortion would be a good choice. JB is not tight in the low end though Mustaine's pickup was a JB for a while. DD is my fave, have a JB also which I really like.

Custom and Black Winter may fit the bill also.

I was under the impression that the DD was even more "icepicky" than the JB?
Bear in mind that I like the JB, but maybe not in this guitar tho...

Depends on your guitar and amp, in mine, I dont hear it, but not to say it couldnt be in your rig.

Another one I just thought of is the Dimebucker but from my understanding, thats a very bright pickup

Pickup recommendations are what we do! I'd actually say the good ol' Custom would work for what you want.

I recommend the Black Winter. To me, it's kinda like the best parts of a Distortion, JB, and Invader thrown into one pickup.

This right here. Distortion is THE thrash pickup imho, custom and black winter also do a great job and are a bit more versatile. Currently swapping a distortion for a custom in my ibanez for that very reason. The fullshred or custom 5 could work as well depending on what flavor you're going for.

Any thoughts on why the Alt8 didn't work out in this guitar?
That's kind of what's confusing me.
From what I've heard the Alt8 and the JB are in the same territory. So if the Alt8 sucked, what are the odds that a DD will sound nice (as opposed to shrill and icepicky)?

What about medium output HB's? Will they work for palm muted stuff?
