Yet another what pickup thread.

I just got a carvin st300 and I wanna get some duncans in it. The guitar is a mahogany body and neck with an ebony board.

I'm looking to replace both pickups. For the bridge I want something that will give me a huge tight low end sound for metal riffs. For the neck I want a pickup for a really nice and smooth sounding lead tone for solos.

Re: Yet another what pickup thread.

Yet another "What amplification and pedals do you use?" reply.

Re: Yet another what pickup thread.

Right now my amp is a vox vt30 but it will soon be a blackstar or bugera magician. I don't use many pedals just a mxr classic overdrive. And mxr carbon copy. What pedals and amps do you recommend.

Re: Yet another what pickup thread.

Nothing in particular. It is just that your guitar and pickups do not exist in isolation.

Re: Yet another what pickup thread.

for a really smooth tone from a neck pickup for solos, I could suggest the alnico II pro. The magnet gives it a lot of sustain and a little cut on the treble, and it sounds very smooth indeed.
Alnico II neck pickups go well with ebony boards too, because ebony often has a bright, strong attack, and the A2 mag usually has kind of spongey attack, so they work well together.

the A2P sometimes comes across as a little bland. The Pearly Gates neck pickup has a little more edgyness that might work better.

I'm not a metal guy so it's hard to recommend the best bridge pickup, but something about "huge tight low end" tells me you'll want a ceramic magnet pickup. An SH-5 custom might work pretty well, or a duncan distortion. A Full Shred might work better if you're going much lower than say D standard.

IMO, "huge tight low end" comes a lot from the amp (and speakers/cab). not sure which blackstar you want, but I wouldn't go for less than the 40W one if you need stage volume.

Re: Yet another what pickup thread.

I've considered an A2P but After finding out it's what slash uses I'm not too sure. His solos have always just sounded like there missing something to me. It's not only slash but whenever I hear an A2P it sounds like that to me.

I'm trying to go for more of an iron maiden neck tone or an avenged seven fold with less treble.

As for the bridge tone I can't really think of any examples but I go nowhere beyond drop d. Actually very rarely do I go below standard. I'll try and find an example Tonight.

Re: Yet another what pickup thread.

I know Syn for AX7 uses either the invader set or invader bridge sustainiac neck,

I think the Custom would work out good, I'd like to see somenone use the distortion neck with the custom.....

Re: Yet another what pickup thread.

Invader/59

or Custom/59

or Super D/PAF

Re: Yet another what pickup thread.

After some research Ive decided on the custom for my bridge and possibly a dimarzio liquifire. Anybody have any experience with a liquifire?

I had the liquifire and I thought it was a solid neck pup, reminded me a bit of a Norton but a little more in your face; I think it would pair well with the custom....
