Yet another wiring question

I have a 1986 MIJ Squier Contemporary Strat and I'm changing the pickup on it

It's a bridge humbucker only model with just a volume pot, I'm changing the single cable pup for a four cable one and looking to add
a push/pull coil tap but it appears that tone pots are preferable for using as a push/pull tap

Any advice re this or would a toggle switch be a better option?

Re: Yet another wiring question

If the guitar has just one control pot, that is the one that would have to be a push-pull.

My elderly Ibanez RG410 has exactly this format EXCEPT Ibanez employed a push-push pot. This performs the same functions as a push-pull but does not protrude when the switch is in the equivalent of the "up" position.

If original cosmetics are of no importance to you and the control cavity is sufficiently generous, a small hole for a DPDT switch is the best option. My preference would be for an on/on/on switch, configured for series/split/parallel.

I like Funkfingers' idea, but just for the record there's no reason in the world why a volume pot push/pull cannot be used. On a push/pull pot the switch is actually an entirely separate entity from the pot in terms of wiring... they're just attached to one another. I think it just works out that a lot of people go for the tone pot for various reasons (my best guess would simply be position on the guitar).

The series/split/parallel switch is a great option and gives you a third choice tonally.
