hey guys,
I made some clips today through my rack setup using my newly Installed Duncan Custom SH-5 In the bridge.

Please dont mind the playing as I havent played the songs I recorded in a long time and wanted to pick songs people know.

The equipment used/Signal Line:
Epiphone LesPaul with Duncan Custom SH-5 In Bridge
ADA MP-1 3Tube Modded (www.adadepot.com)
Rocktron Intellifex
Peavey Classic 60/60 Tube Poweramp
Yorkville 2x12 With Classic Lead 80 Speakers.

Mic used: AKG (not sure of model)
Placed of Mic: Center of Cone
Cables Used: Canare GS-6 cables with Neutrik Connectors

For recording I used "Sound Recorder" on my computer as .wav files then used another program (Roxio) to convert them from .wav to MP3. Let me know what you guys think of the clips.

They are:
AcDc - Highway To Hell
Metallica - Disposable Hero
Metallica - Fade To Black
Ozzy - Bark At The Moon
Testament - Perilous Nation
Judas Priest - Living After Midnight (Direct Recording and has Drums)
Fooling Around 1
Fooling Around 2
VanHalen - Aint Talking Bout Love
VanHalen - You Really Got me

Let me know what you think.

Enjoy,

Dude!!! Badass tone!!! That's really awesome. Would a stock MP-1 with the 3.666 mod get somewhere in that ballpark, or is it pure 3TM?

Thanks :) .. What you hear in there is Pure 3TM MP-1. It also has the EQ mod and Noise Mod. Its a dry patch. No effects added at all.

The 3.666 & 3TM are very different mods. According to Hairston (on adadepot.com board), he said that the new Mod4 Mark II should get you really close to the 3TM tone.

Hey, nice and thick/beefy tone bro! Nice playing also! I especially liked the beefy tone on the testament tune. How is the clean with the Custom?

You have me thinking....I have the Rio Grande BBQ in my LP and have a Custom on the way. I am wondering if I'll like the Cusotm even more. I am trying hard to not have to go to EMGs.

papersoul,
If you listen to the Metallica - Fade To Black clips, that clean part is done with the Duncan Custom. I just added some chorus to the sound on the clean patch.

Listen to the Intellifex clip (with anything clean).. all are done with the Duncan Custom. The 3 way switch was set on bridge. So the Custom Sh-5 was doing all the work.

See.. the Custom SH-5 is not an extremely hot pickup.. you'll definitly be able to get awsome clean tones from it. I dont think the EMG will have useful cleans but I cant judge as I have never tried it on clean, only distortion at my friend's place and it didnt impress me at all.

enjoy,

Thansk again Duke!

Did your friend have the EMGs set properly? They need to be almost touching the strings. What did he have in the bridge as I hear the 85 is much fatter and warmer in the bridge.

Check out the clips on this site. The guys uses EMGs exclusively.

I believe he had EMG81 in the bridge. It was the type of guitar with only 1 pickup (bridge), so he decided to put the EMG81. I dont remember how he had it setup, but to me, it sounded stiff and had a nasal sounding on the top end a little bit.

But.. its different sound tastes for everybody. He liked it and I didnt :). Only way to find out is to try it through your setup your self.

ek, my misunderstanding....sorry

at first i read what you said fast and didnt read your gear list and assumed you ment lots of rack effects, dumb me..

Re: You wanted Duncan Custom SH-5 clips.. you got Duncan Custom SH-5 Clips :D

Duke, I just meant that the 85 is MUCH warmer than the 81 and sounds very thick.

well.. i've never tried the 85, so I couldnt comment on it but like you said and many have told me, the 85 seems to sound thicker then the 81.

If I were you to be honest, I'd get the Duncan Custom and try it. If you dont like it, there are more then enough people to buy it off ya.. so, It would still hold a re-sale value. I'd say give it a shot.

The whole pickup thing is "trial & Error". You just gotta try different pickups until you come across one that satisfies you and gives you the sound like.

I plugged my rig today through a JCM900 1960 cabinet and it sounded VERY VERY nice. The sound was tight, thick yet open and crunchy. i dont remember it being like that when i had the stock Epi pickup.

Oh.. by the way guys, I made some more clips.

Van Halen - Aint Talking Bout Love
Van Halen - You Really Got Me
Fooling Around 1
Fooling Around 2

again.. I am not Van Halen, so dont mind the playing. I just did them because a person wanted to hear 2 VH clips done with the pickup and the rig. the other 2 are just fooling around with neck and bridge pickup on some lead stuff and the other is just on the crunch channel lighter over drive.

Whooooaaaaaa!

thanks for those clips. good playing, great toooooone!

I think this is probably one of the most beneficial/helpful mp3 posts for this forum, as to a hard rock/metal person, that sh-5 is a rockin pup!

I urge more people to listen to these clips!!!! I like the fade to black one most, as it shows the versatility of the sh-5!

must...have....sh-5...must...have...

Thanks HardRockSinger.. I gotta agree. The Duncan Custom Sh-5 is an awsome pickup. After I put it in my Epi Lespaul instead of the Epi Stock Pick. I noticed difference. Even Thought I had to sorta crank the gain a tad more, it was still clear, tight and crunchy.

I should have recorded before and after clips :smack:
