What are your favorite songs to play in typical pubs? What would you like to play there? Or maybe you have some essential pieces, without which you can't play in pub? Waiting for your opinions.. :D

Re: Your favorite songs to play in pubs....

you cant not do an ACDC song, or an iron maiden song.

even a jazz gig needs a bit of back in black ;)

old school rock seems to go down the best anyway

Re: Your favorite songs to play in pubs....

I guess by "pub" you mean "bar". :D

A word of caution - Do NOT be tempted to play "Smells Like Teen Spirit" on any gig.... it has been so overplayed that you will instantly be recognized as someone who can't think up a more unique song to cover. Ditto Stairway.

I love the endless novelty of taking boring-ass pop songs and doing uptempo punk arrangements of them. It's fun, easy and people get a HUGE kick out of it. Listen to Me First and the Gimme Gimmes for ideas, then go for some of your own. This especially goes over well if you're playing to a college-age audience or anyone who has a good sense of humor.

I can't play somewhere without playing an old weezer song, like from the blue album. That's some of the best rock ever!

Texas flood is a must or anything by stevie, most people can respect that kind of music except for the insanly heavy metal people.

If you have a good guitar player--hit em off with a little of Funkadelic's "Maggot Brain". The solo is so nasty, any rocker, metalhead, or blues lover will love it.

Anything by Great Big Sea.

WOW! I can't believe there's someone else on this forum that knows who they are!! Are you a Newfie, screamingdaisy?!

I've seen Great Big Sea perform in New York about 10 times so far! They are amazing!!

Re: Your favorite songs to play in pubs....

No, not a Newf.

But I'm in the army, and the army is about 1/3 Newfoundlanders, so I kinda get Newfie culture ingrained in me through osmosis.

Great Big Sea perform in Kingston alot, but I always manage to be busy with work when they're in town. Good group of guys though, as plenty of my buddies usually party with them afterwords (after the show they almost always end up at a local pub called the Tir nan Óg)

The house band at the Tir nan Óg (The Shores of Newfoundland, which funnily enough doesn't have any Newfies in it) does alot of Great Big Sea covers though, along with plenty of other folk music favorites.

A local band I know used to do a wonderful version of "War Pigs"... always drew in a heavy crowd and the guys at the bar who didn't know who they were were going crazy.

IMO rearanging songs is a big fun.. Recently i've played my version of "little wing" i few pubs and many people told me that that was the best piece.. The version is more jazzy, less aggresive, with a girl singing it very melodicaly, but i think we managed to cath the character of oryginal one...
