Alright, after reading a bunch of posts, and without having to start another, full on, “which pickup is best for me” thread, I’ll give you my idea, and you guys let me know what you think. Would an 81/85 EMG setup most closely relate to (in Duncan land) an sh-6 (distortion) / sh-8 (invader) setup? I know what differences are between active and passive pickups are, and I have a Duncan Distortion set, but I think that would to “metal” for me. I’m not looking for straight 80’s here, but I would like a “hard hitting” versatile setup (some metal, some rock, some nu-metal, mostly the latter). It’s going into a mahogany Schecter Omen6 guitar. I want bass, mids and highs. Any ideas guys, an Invader bridge and a Distortion neck, or vise-versa? Thanks for you opinions!

Re: Your opinion please.

What exactly do you want to know? I mean I know nothing about alll those EMGs out there, but I can tell you the Distortion is quite nice for any hi-gain metal stuff, although not "really" so '80s-ish... for the '80s I'd choose a JB... but well seems like you're a more modern guy anyway. The Invader *could* get a bit muddy in a mahogany guitar, but it can be used for nu-metal I suppose.

Re: Your opinion please.

Good start. okay, "not so 80ish" is the exact direction im headed, lol. but from reading other posts, i got that impression (of the SH-6). hmmm, muddy huh? that's one thing im trying to avoid, if i can, but it's not nessesary. i guess i like the fact that the ivader has more bass. i dont solo, i do rhythm. i know the simple answer is to "get a set of EMG's", but i don't want them. sound wise would be mudvayne, seether, slipknot etc.... you know the guys that use EMG's. haha. alright, what would something in between the invader and the distortion be? full shred is out, so is the dimebucker, i think. would that sound "muddy" too? anyone here ever hear of the Emil bulls? they use engl's and VHT heads, and i know thats an important part of the sound, but i love that tone. in the future i'll be upgrading amps and all, but for now i'd like to be set with the pickups. thanks guys! rock on! :bigthumb: :9:

Re: Your opinion please.

Oh yeah, PS, i have a distortion bridge and neck, so if someone has an idea for either position, your comments would be greatly apprieciated.

Re: Your opinion please.

I tried these pup combos in my Omen

JB/Jazz DD/DD DD/Jazz Custom/Jazz Custom/DD

I like the Custom/DD in that guitar.

The Invader IMO wouldn't be a good choice.

Re: Your opinion please.

IMO the 81/85 would be tonally and output wise closest to a Distortion bridge and a Custom bridge, respectively....

Off topic, but first, the guys from Seether use Duncan-loaded Schecters (probably JB/'59), and second, these three band's guitar tones aren't all that similar.

Re: Your opinion please.

Particularly Slipknot´s tones are very thin IMO.. SLipknot get their power from the percussion, not the guitars ;)

Zerb, what up man, long time no type. i used to be on here afew months before what appears to be the "Mar 2004" meltdown, acoording to everyones signup dates, lol.

Yeah, i realize that about the knot. hmmm, maybe im looking for "sonic" simularities, but tuned to "my own thing". nix on the invader, im gonna stick with my mayhem DD set and see where it takes me. i've read on here that the DD's may sound muddy in a mahogony bodied guitar, but i can f*** with the P/U heights and the EQ. thanks for getting back to me guys!

true, they're not the same tones. i have diamonds series P/U's that came in the guitar, still in there (i need a soldering iron, lol) and they have ceramic magnets, and by screwing with my amp settings i can get a pretty good "seether" tone from it. hey, it's makes the wife happy, she more into em' then i am.

Hey Bro.. Happy New year

BTW, wasn´t a meltdown, but rather SWD and Co. were generous enough to buy a cool software and get a new server for us.. I figured you´d have noticed the new upholstery and drapes :D :headbang:

Re: Your opinion please.

I don't think there's a comparable SD pickup to EMG actives. What are you wanting? They make passive versions at EMG, and I've played an Epiphone Jakk Wilde Sig. guitar before, it was nice, just not SD. SD makes active pickups, so maybe you're thinking LiveWire Metal? Or do you absolutely need passive?

Uh, ok, nice, but dismount for a second and please talk logically with me. What do you want? What is it about your current setup that you don't like?
