Your Opinions Please!

Ok, i'm building a guitar from the ground up, Using a Mighty Mite body (normally i'd go warmoth, but i got it for super cheap, brand new, $93) Its an ash-back, quilt maple top, rear-routed, strat-style guitar with an H-S-S pup route, going for a wilkinson trem.

The neck is a warmoth, Full maple with a graphite nut, stainless steel frets.

I am playing sort of a mix between oldschool metal and modern rock.. Queensryche-ish with beefier guitar work, and a more modern sound.

We play in drop D, although the bassist is really the rythm section, and he has a great sound, so I dont need a ton of bass, most of the umph comes from him.

I am the lead guitarist, so I need a good solo sound, and there is a fair amount of shreddage in the solos.

The pickups that I put together (based on the sound clips) are:

Bridge: Sh-5 Duncan Custom, Nickel Cover
Mid:STK-S4m Classic Stack Plus (occasionally i want a more percussive, truly single coil sound, but of course without the hum, so I chose this one)
Neck: SCR-1 Cool Rails (much better tone than hot rails imo)

Now the guitar itself is pretty bright (all maple neck, ash body, maple top) so I am a bit worried about being too bright, but then again I've seen quite a few guitars with full maple necks, non-mahogany bodies, and a brighter pickup in the bridge... and they sounded pretty damn good...

Just wondering if anyone could give me their opinions/suggestions. I was thinking of going with a Custom Custom in the bridge, the clip sounded pretty good, but i'm not too sure...

Also, i'm only using a 3 way selector, for simplicity, and I want each position to have its own sound (Bridge-Most distortion, soloing, workhorse... Mid - Same as above with more "pop" and articulation, little less output, sort of an aggressive blues tone, Neck - Cleans and a few singing leads) I never used the middle positions on any of my H-S-S guitars anyways.

Well, any help appreciated...

btw, any opinions on the Wilkinson tremolo? Is it "useable" and will it stay in tune? (I dont dive bomb, but i like to use the trem for Van Halen type Nuances, can the wilkinson handle it?)

Re: Your Opinions Please!

Are you using Sperzel locking tuners? If so, the Wilkinson will make you very happy.

I like your choices for pickups. The only other thing I'd recommend is try out the Duncan Distortion. KILLER pickup.

Re: Your Opinions Please!

I'm sure the PW locking tuners will work just as well.

I'd also recommend an LSR roller nut. I played a Jeff Beck Strat (off the shelf), and you could whammy that thing every bit as hard as a Floyd (they're setup with locking tuners, the LSR nut, and a 2-point Am. Strat bridge).

Re: Your Opinions Please!

was looking at the LSR, but warmoth charges 40 bucks to widen the nut slot for the lsr, and then another 40 bucks to BUY the lsr... So i went graphite instead, from my experience it doesn't bind at all... of course an lsr would work even better.

Re: Your Opinions Please!

I'm sure the graphite one will be fine. You can always upgrade in the future if it's giving you trouble.

Re: Your Opinions Please!

I guess I don't know why you would want a nickel cover for the bridge pickup? The Custom or Custom 5 would be a good fit though. If you want a great single sized neck bucker the JB jr is very good although it doesn't have the single coil vibe. Look for some heavy cast roller string trees or for that matter if the neck is bayonet style you could go with height compensated tuners.

Re: Your Opinions Please!

Good choices. The Custom Is probably best for your style but the CC would work as well. The CC is only a magnet swap away so you can always change your mind.

The only things I might do if it was my guitar is putting in a 5 way switch and getting a Hot Stack for the mid slot indtead of the Stack+. I love the Stack+ pickups tone but the Hot Stack is a bit louder and will balance a little better with the lil59.

I have a jb/Hot Stack/llil59n loaded Strat and it's a serious tone machine.

Re: Your Opinions Please!

Sounds like one hell of a guitar. Post some recordings when you're done!

Re: Your Opinions Please!

Hey, I got another idea..... a Tele-style switch so you can use neck, neck/bridge, or bridge, and a push/pull tone knob that will add the middle pickup to any of those.

Re: Your Opinions Please!

yea.. I had thought about doing some sorta push/pull setup or some other funky wiring job...

Problems are A. I want Simplicity, have enough problems working my pedal board, B. i'm wiring this baby myself. A push/pull pot is not hard but i'm not a fan of wiring.

I had also thought about keeping the 3-way switch, going with 2 concentric pots, (since i rarely mess with the tone knob), wiring one Pot to the bridge, the second pot to the mid and neck positions, and then wiring on the pickup selector: Position One: Bridge, Position Two: Bridge/Mid, and Position Three Bridge/Neck. Would allow me to use only a 3 way selector, and still get every combination of pickups accept mid/neck, which I rarely use.

But If I wanted to use ONLY the neck or mid pup, I would have to turn the volume knob for the bridge all the way down in order to cut it out of the mix, but I would also be able to mix it in as much as I want on the Bridge/Neck and Bridge/Mid combos.

Good in the studio maybe but too much to deal with onstage... although not as complex as some other wiring schemes.
