Your thoughts on the Vox Valvetronix AD50vt

i am looking for a simple new amp around 30-50 watts.
Those that have one or have played one, are they good for live use or more an amp to use at home, and do they sound anything like the amps theyre trying to model?

In terms of tone what makes a modeling amp sound not as good as a tube amp? (even tho this one has tubes).

I have heard some can sound like they have a blanket over the speaker is this true?

I think with the Vox AD50 would be fun for playing at home or in a practice situation. If I was going to gig with a Valvetronix, I'd get the AD-60 or AD120 head and a good cabinet. Like the original amps, if someone doesn't know how to tweak the settings the Vox will sound like crap, like a blanket is over it. But with proper settings and a decent cab, this shouldn't be a problem. The limitation for the AD-50 is the particle board cabinet and the speaker. But it does have a speaker out that mutes the internal speaker, so it could be used with a decent cabinet. I'm not sure how close the sounds are to the original amps being modelled, but they sure are fun to play and do have some of the dynamics of a tube amp.

One of the guitarists in my band has the "120" watt twin speaker combo version, the 60 will just not cut it live. He gets really spiffing tones both for lead and rythm work, but it took a million years of tweaking to get there (long hols see), so, if you want to zap 'em out of the box, fergerrit. IF you are a patient tone messiah, it really can be done, even wiv strats.
As far as copying a specific amp, not much joy there as he also still uses his fender and trace elliot - you can get really good noises from the vox and it's very versatile, but copying amps is still only approximate and only as good as the time you are prepared to spend.

I hope he writes down all the settings and keeps them in a safe place. If he ever has to re-set the amp, all his pre-sets will be lost. Your right, the Valvetronix requires serious amounts of tweaking. And I don't think one patch fits all. You have to set patches for your style, your guitar, your room, on and on. It's not easy, but knowledge of the original amps & effects will help alot. Like pushing the mids for 4x12 tweed and keeping the bass low and hitting it with the overdrive with the drive low and level high. Treat it like the real thing for best results, but it won't be an exact match, but still fun.

huh?? since when???? modelers are the best thing for low budget guitarists like me since sliced bread!

yea.. my GP couldnt handle the full frontal metal assault i was trying to put it through... there's no place for the weak in metal :headbang:

I just got this amp and it's awesome! One thing though...how would I set up 1 preset to be clean and loud, and 2 preset to be dist? My distortion drowns the heck out of the clean. I need a louder clean.

Re: Your thoughts on the Vox Valvetronix AD50vt

Hey A skater try dialing in the presets in manual mode, that way you can tweak the volume of each preset. Hey Dills buy this amp, I bought one in december and still have not heard anything else in this price range that remotely comes close to it. Not sure what everyone one is talking about needing patience to dial this amp in? It sounds great right out of the box. Having said this, my next purchase will be a ad60vt head and two speaker cabinet.

Sorry, I got confused. I was hoping for a convert from someone who downtalks anything but tubes. My bad.

Oh yeah, my AD-30 rocked right out of the box. I even like the presets, but I often bypass the effects. I don't like its reverb nearly as much as on the AD-60 open back 1x12 combo, but the flanger is fun on the ad-30. I had a tougher time tweaking the AD-60 I bought a year ago. It was difficult for me because I didn't have much experience with all the amps it was modelling. I'm getting some sweet tones out of it now. It's not just the Valvetronix I have trouble tweaking, most amps can be a bit frustrating for me. But I get it after a while.

Spot on on all counts (he has to eat tweaks between guitars which rots yer teeth and yer brain and a pisser at gigs) - despite the amp he's really not a techie type, so it'll all go foom one day.
He has also tried to set up the vox with his fender and my marshall A/B/C'd next to it and the vox sure is sweet, but even after 2 million tweaks it still doesn't sound like either of the other amps - tough, eh
